Note: The characters in Oz are meant to be reincarnations of the characters from Dorothy's real life. Therefore, they are meant to be played by the same actors. Some companies, however, choose to cast the parts separately to increase the cast size and eliminate the need for difficult costume/makeup changes.
The munchkins are usually played by a chorus of children.

Performers auditioning for the role of the witch should become familiar with her long evil speeches. |
- Dorothy Gale (10 - 13, mezzo/soprano)
- may be played by girls up to the age of 18, depending on the production and the age of the other performers. A girl frustrated with her sheltered life.
- Aunti Em/Glinda (35 - 50, soprano)
- - a stern mother-figure, Dorothy's guiding light

- a cranky old woman
