- Mary Poppins (Soprano, 25 - 35)
- a pretty young woman, a nurturing mother and a wise old woman, all in one - a magical and mysterious woman who appears just when she is needed most
- Bert (Baritone to G, Cockney Accent, 30s)
- Manly but warm. Inexplicably has a variety of occupations - match man, pavement painter, chimney sweep, hurdy gurdy player. A friend of Mary Poppins who is always nearby to watch the children and observe the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. A song and dance man.
- Mr. George Banks
- a severe, serious banker who "runs a tight ship" both at work and at home. We can see he loves his children although he is very strict. He softens over time.
- Mrs. Banks
- a valiant and fervent soufragette and feminist with a hectic schedule

- Miss Andrew is Mr Banks' old governess. Although not in the film, Miss Andrew appears in the new stage version. She has a lark called Caruso.

- the disgruntled nanny who quit the Banks family.
- Robinson Ay
- the manservant whose ineptitude and constant sleeping so irritates Mr. Banks. This character does not appear in the movie due to casting limitations. However, he has been put into the musical.
