Guillaume wants to marry Bertrande, who has an arranged marriage with Martin, who wants to lead his own life. Martin runs away to war and takes a blow meant for Arnaud, who runs off thinking Martin is dead. Meanwhile, the townsfolk have decided that Guillaume ought to marry Bertrande. When Arnaud comes to the city to tell them of Martin's death, he first meets Benoit, the village idiot whom he tells the news. Somehow the villagers get the idea that Arnaud is Martin and he is forced to play along. Bertrande soon realizes he is not Martin, but he agrees to stay as Martin and protect her. The two grow fond of each other and fall in love. Guillaume has other plans though and claiming the Martin is a Protestant is ready to kill him when Benoit tells that he is not truly Martin. There is then a trial to figure out who he is, during which the real Martin arrives. Arnaud is jailed, but when Martin realizes they are truly and love and thought him to be dead, he helps them escape. Guillaume learns of the escape and tries to kill Martin, but Arnaud takes the blow instead. |
