1960s on Long Island. Belle spends a great deal of time and effort trying to achive culture, wealth and social position so that she will be good enough for Noble Eggleson's mother to let her marry him. By the time she achieves her goals, Noble is no longer rich, but Belle still loves him anyway.
Noble, Val du Val, Mr. Pinchley, Prince Cherney, Otto Schnitzler, & Fred Poitrine will originally all meant to be played by the same performer, but some productions may choose to cast them separately.
