Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.
1920s & 1930s. Rose has two young daughters. The younger, June, is Rose's pet. Rose spends all her time and energy trying to make June a star. When June eventually gets fed up and runs away to be married, Rose turns her attention on Louise.
Although all the characters in the show talk about June's talent, it should really be the performer who plays Louise that should shine. The two girls must perform together and sing harmony. Their voices should work together well.
The DVD version starring Bette Midler follows the stage version closely. I prefer Midler's vocal performance to Merman.
Audition Preparation Suggestions for
Gypsy
Dancing is required for both girls (both child & adult versions) as well as the burlesque dancers. |
- Rose (Alto with belt)

- the epitome of horrible stage mothers
- Louise (Mezzo)

- Rose's younger, brow-beaten daughter - has a crush on Tulsa
- June (Alto)
- The older she gets, the less she enjoys being her mother's trained monkey.
- Herbie (Baritone)
- Rose's agent and suitor - a gentle man
- Tulsa (Baritone, tap & ballet dance)

- One of June's boy chorus dancers. Very "boy next door" and very talented. Loves June.
- Baby June (child belt, flexible)
- Very overproduced young girl - pretty, cute, and fake
- Baby Louise
- June's "less-talented" older sister
- Tessie Tura (Mezzo belt, ballet)

- a burlesque dancer that shares her dressing room with Louise.
- Mazeppa (Alto belt, ability to play trumpet an asset)

- a burlesque dancer
-
- Electra (Mezzo belt)

- a burlesque dancer
-
- Miss Cratchitt
