Chicago is loosely based on an actual murder trial that took place there in 1924. While the details of the actual murder are quite different, Chicago accurately depicts the press & public's strange fascination with the trial. The trial inspired Maureen Watkins to write the play on which Chicago is based. Chicago is told in the style of a series of "vaudeville" song-acts that highlight the major players in the drama.
If you are trying to decide on which version of the cast recording to buy, I personally recommend the Broadway Revival version, which stars the incredible Bebe Neuwirth. The original OBC is also extremely popular.
All That Jazz is an extremely overdone audition piece and should be avoided.
Audition Suggestions For Chicago
