Based on John Druten's play I Am A Camera. I Am A Camera, in turn, was based on the novel The Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood.

Germany in the 1920's. A young American writer moves to Berlin, only to fall in love with a singer at the sleazy "Kit Kat Club". He weaves himself into a terrible web of illegal smuggling and his new girlfriend gets pregnant. On the eve of the Third Reich, Clifford decides to flee Germany and return to America, but Sally refuses to join him and aborts their baby. Sadly Clifford returns to America alone, his experiences becoming the inspiration for a new book. His memories appear like ghosts to surround the train.

Audition Suggestions for Cabaret

Almost every performer in Cabaret must be able to jazz dance well.

If asked to read the script, it is likely you will be required to use a German accent.

Sally Bowles (Alto, 17 - 27)
A youthful looking but going nowhere English dancer at the Kit Kat Club. She eventually falls in love with Clifford.
Clifford Bradshaw (Baritone, 25 - 35)
A young, sincere American writer who also teaches English lessons. He eventually falls in love with Sally.
Fraulein Schneider (Alto, 45 - 70)
A moralistic yet pragmatic woman who rents a room in her house to Clifford. She is in love with Herr Schultz.
Herr Schultz (Baritone/Tenor, 50 - 70)
An elderly Jewish greengrocer who is in love with Fraulein Schneider.
Ernst Ludwig (Non-Singing, 30 - 45)
A nervous yet streetwise German who pays Clifford for English lessons and turns out to be a Nazi.
