Jekyll & Hyde Summary, cont.

After the scene at his engagement party, Dr Jekyll heads to a brothel to drown his sorrows with his friend, Utterson. A prostitute, Nellie, encourages them to put argument aside and stick around for Lucy, a burlesque singer-turned-postitute. Lucy tries to entice him but he declines and offers her a visiting card for times when she is in need of a friend.

>From his encounters at the brothel, Jekyll comes to the realization that he, himself, must be the subject of his experiments. Closed in his laboratory, Dr Jekyll consumes his own potion and records in his journal the changes he experiences. His writing stops when he suddenly feels violently ill and begins the transformation into Edward Hyde, a collaboration of all his innermost, darkest traits. Hyde bursts from Dr Jekyll's laboratory and crosses London to the brothel Jekyll had just left and finds his way to Lucy.

Days later, Jekyll has gone back and forth between himself and Hyde. Emma convinces Utterson that there is something wrong with Henry, that he has not contacted her and hasn't been taking his meals. Utterson tries to approach Henry, tries to get him to stop his experiments, unaware of what has actually happened, but Henry will not be changed.

Lucy comes to see Dr Jekyll about an abusive customer she has been seeing, while dressing her wounds, Lucy tells him how she only wants true love and kisses him before leaving. Once alone, Lucy wonders what it would be like to be loved by such a kind man as Dr Jekyll.

During this time there begins a string of murders, killing many of the who were opposed to Henry's work and engagement. It is clear that Jekyll is losing his control over Hyde. Jekyll discovers Emma reading his journal and yells at her in a very Hyde-like manner. Emma realises that she is losing her fiancee to his work, but says she will be there waiting for him when he is finished.

Utterson approaches Jekyll, aware that something unusual has happened. Jekyll acknowledges that Hyde is a colleague of his and must be respected, Utterson still holds some trust in Jekyll. Dr Jekyll takes another dose of his potion and becomes Hyde again, then pays a visit to Lucy. Hyde seduces Lucy, but underneath lies the thought that maybe she is being drawn to Jekyll underneath.

Days later, Utterson breaks into Jekyll's lab in search of him, but discovers Hyde instead. Hyde is disheveled and worn, no longer powerful. Hyde allows Utterson to see the transformation back to Jekyll, then Jekyll tells Utterson he must warn Lucy about Hyde. Henry knows he must find a way to counteract the potion and put his life back in order.

Utterson goes to Lucy with a letter from Henry which includes money, she must leave London for her own safety. She dreams of a better life, but her daydreams are interrupted by the appearance of Hyde. Hyde, in an extremely dark mood, discovers that Dr Jekyll is trying to send Lucy away, and while trying to seduce Lucy, Hyde stabs and kills her. As soon as he has done this, Hyde breaks down and turns back into Jekyll, who is horrified at what he's done. Then without warning, Hyde reappears in the mirror and the two have an argument back and forth before Jekyll takes over completely.

The next day finds Emma and Henry standing at the altar at their wedding. Unfortunately, in the middle of the ceremony Henry is unable to control himself and turns into Edward Hyde again. When a guest, Simon Stride, attempts to stop him, he kills him and then reaches for Emma. He threatens to kill her, all the while Jekyll tries to break through, demanding that Utterson kill him. Utterson moves forward, but thinks again, until Hyde takes the blade and stabs himself. Jekyll then falls, dying, into the arms of Emma. As he dies she tells him he is free of the evil and will be with her forever.
