A musical version of Nash's The Rainmaker. 11O IN THE SHADE takes place in 1933 during the dust bowl times in a small, drought-stricken town of the American southwest. The lives of the Curry family and the rest of the townsfolk are affected by Starbuck, a con man on the run from the law who promises he can bring rain within 24 hours.
Nash's book is faithful to his original play, although all the interior scenes were moved outdoors to allow for the addition of townspeople for ensemble numbers and dances. Many of Jones\' lyrics come directly from Nash\'s play.

- Lizzie Curry (Mezzo, 30s)
- A strong, smart, but very plain looking spinster. She yearns desperately for romance.
- H.C Curry (Baritone, 50 - 70)
- Lizzie's father. He is in his late fifties, powerfully set, capable, dependable - but a dreamer too.
- Noah Curry (Baritone, 30-40)
- Lizzie's older brother. Like his father, without H.C.'s imagination. He would appear to be self-righteous and rigidly opinionated were it not for his basic decency and his warm yearning to be kind.
- Jimmy Curry (Tenor, tap dancer, 20s)
- Lizzie's younger brother. Big and broad-shouldered, but the mind of a child. He is filled with longing.
- Bill Starbuck (Baritone to G, 30s)
- A big man, lithe, agile -- a loud braggart, a gentle dreamer. Starbuck is the driving force of the story - a strong actor who sings and is able to carry the intimate romantic scenes as well as the big musical numbers.
- File (Baritone, 40s)
- The sheriff, He is a lean man, reticent, intelligent, in his late thirties. He smiles wryly at the world and at himself. The town's most elligible bachelor.
