Costume Storage
The key to easy costuming is knowing what you already have, and taking care of your growing inventory. Even if you don't have access to a lot of storage space, there are still many things you can do to keep things clean, organized, and easy to take care of. Although it does mean a little extra time when a show is over, it will save much more time for next year. Protect against dust and mildew. If your storing conditions aren't the greatest (ie the back corner of the school's boiler room) you need to make sure your costume resources are protected.
- Any item that will get wrinkled, such as dresses, dress pants and shirts, should be hung on a hanger and protected with a garbage bag with a hole cut in the bottom to put the hanger through. These can all be kept on one of those aluminum racks that come on wheels for easy transport.
- Put any items that don't need to be hung, such as shawls and scarves, in a large sturdy tupperware-type storage box neatly labeled with a list of its contents. These boxes are easy to stack and will not only keep out mildew and dust but also any small creatures that might want to make a nest in your costumes.
Content lists on the boxes should include the colour, size, and condition of each item. This list can also be used to ensure that all items are returned after the show, and keep track of any alterations/mending that needs to be done.
