Tips For Taped Auditions
While inperson auditions are always ideal, sometimes geography requires us to send in a pre-recorded audition for a competition or application to a performing arts school.
It is easy for audition panels not to take a taped audition as seriously as an in-person audition, for many reasons. Your goal is to see that your taped audition is as much like the "real thing" as possible.
- Film Yourself in "One Cut"
- Taped auditions can seem less authentic because of your ability to stop and redo anything you mess up on. Resist the urge to piece together your best performances, and film your audition with as few camera stops as possible. Ideally, you should be able to do the entire thing - monologue, songs, etc - without stopping or pausing at all. This sends a strong message about your confidence and level of preparation.
- Quality Is Essential!
- Just as talking too quietly would ruin an in-person audition, poor sound or image quality will ruin a taped audition. Test the quality before completing the final taping. You may need to work with microphones to get accompaniment to balance with your voice level. Use a tripod - shaky camera work is not an option.
- This Is An Audition - Not A Film Project
- They just want to see you audition, so don't get fancy with camera angles and sound effects. Film the audition from a single camera position so that your whole body is clearly in view. Keep your background free of distractions.
- Follow The Audition Requirements Carefully
- Even if the audition requirements do not specify an interview, begin your taped audition with a friendly but brief introduction. Follow all rules and regulations that have been set up for the "live" interviews.
- Cover Your Butt!
- Do NOT mail your original copy of the audition - make a copy first. Send it well in advance of the deadline and use a shipping method that has tracking and will verify the date it is received.
