Non-Traditional Monologues

A non-traditional or unconventional monologue is any text that does not come from a script. This can really be any kind of text: stories, newspaper articles, stand-up comedy, a poem... you get the picture.

Non-traditional monologues are used in a variety of audition situations. Sometimes the type of performance the audition is for is not a traditional script. Sometimes a suitable traditional selection cannot be found. Sometimes we feel a need to be different. Sometimes it's just what is asked for.

The key when choosing a non-traditional piece is to make sure it still meets all requirements of the audition (very important!) and that it demonstrates the skills you need to demonstrate. Narrative pieces (storytelling) are by far the most common non-traditional sources for monologues.
