Last week, I went on one of my Amazon runs, where I buy used copies of new Broadway shows. And this show caught my eye and I am SO GLAD I ordered the CD. The premise of this show is relatively simple. It's a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical.
Sounds great already, right? The show starts off with a witty [Untitled Opening Number]. It continues with a duet between the "two guys" Hunter and Jeff, Two Nobodies in New York. And by the time you finish the third track An Original Musical, you are falling off your seat laughing. And then there's the hilarious, random Monkeys and Playbills, which names about 30 short-lived shows in 3 minutes. Next there is about 15 seconds of Hunter singing The Tony Award Song, but Jeff breaks in and says "We can't put that song on the CD, a Tony award joke is too easy. It's like making a joke about Les Mis or Phantom of the Opera!" The next *real* song is entitled Part of it All, in which Hunter and Jeff explore the possiblities having a successful show could bring.
Then two more funny numbers I Am Playing me and What Kind of Girl is She introduce the girls, Heidi and Susan, better as the show continues to take shape. And my favorite song in the show Die Vampire, Die!, however strange the title is, presents the first serious moment of the show as it talks about the 'vampires' that hold back your creative expression. In the next two songs Filling out the Form and September Song, the show prepares for and performs in a theatre festival. When the guys go speak with possible producers, Heidi and Susan are left on stage to sing Secondary Characters. When the producers the guys talk to want the show to go in a different direction, the cast wonder if they should go with their instincts. Heidi shares her own personal struggles in A Way Back to Then. And the cast decides they'd rather be Nine People's Favorite Thing (than a Hundred People's Ninth favorite thing).
This show does have a good bit of vulgarity, and I'm not quite sure why it doesn't have a Parental Advisory Warning. This is definitely not a show for kids. It is hilarious, witty, touching, and I think it is really relevant to theatre kids and the way we think. My parents don't like it at all, but I've shared it with my theatre friends, and they enjoy it as much as I do. So if you're in the mood for a new, funny Off-Broadway show, I really recommend this soundtrack. :)
