Brett Manning's Singing Success is a systematic vocal training program. The package purchased via the singing success website includes:
17 sessions on 12 audio discs;
Program DVD; and
Exercise book
What sets this program apart from other vocal programs is the cost and Manning's pragmatic techniques. This program is available for $199.00 USD which is much cheaper than the thousands of dollars you might pay for multiple vocal coaches and academies. The downside is the lack of human interaction; nothing works your will power more than having a pushing hand behind you to get you going. However, a free consultation is included with purchase to set your bar before beginning the program.
The first two cds point out the fact and fiction of vocalistics and the science behind the art of singing. The scientific method is implemented through Manning's techniques throughout the program. Each session begins with a previous exercise, except it's been uptempoed or altered to push your voice into the next session and to keep the cords warmed up.
The program has to be exercised with moderation. Purchasing this alone will not grant a flexible and wonderous voice. The lack of human interaction to correct what might be wrong or to ride along with the singer will require them to commit to it. This is a program for the strong and self-disciplined. Sessions can be and should be repeated before moving on to the next in order to stimulate muscle memory as well as prevent any vocal damage. Taking longer breaks of vocal rest than normal may also be necessary. If a singer tries to hard then the damage may require a day or two before revisiting the sessions. However, the dvd video provides effective vocal relaxation techniques and dietary tips to maximize vocal efficiency. The most important thing to remember when beginning this program is to start on a new plain, so do not judge ability until at least half way through the sessions. It's always a surprise to hear what might come of your voice when you allow it to be free.
This program is worthwhile for the singers who cannot afford academic or coach help and even for those who can. The techniques touched on can be a real eye opener as to how singing works. Through understanding comes practice and performance. This also sheds light on the myth of "you've either got it or you don't". Anyone can sing, it's only a matter of learning how. So, if you're a person who is willing to work hard and dedicate time to tedious vocal work then this program is definitely worth buying. Break a leg out there.
