Audition Monologues For Teens

There is often a great deal of competition to find the perfect teenage monologue. The reasons for this are many - not only must teenagers play a very narrow age range, but there are also fewer roles that offer suitable monologues in the first place. Add to this the fact that teenagers face college auditions, competing with other would-be teenage actors, and the pressure to find the perfect, original, NOT-overdone monologue is fierce.

While I agree that the popularity of a monologue should be considered when making a choice, simply choosing a monologue "they haven't heard before" should not be your primary concern. When choosing a teenage monologue, consider the following:

  • The monologue should be from an actual play, not a stand-alone monologue.
  • The monologue CAN be put together from dialogue in a play.
  • The monologue should contain content that is appropriate for your age, as well as be content that you can relate to.
  • The monologue should reflect your type.

  • Never choose a monologue just because it is "shocking". Monologues with edgy content are usually much more difficult to pull off, and you are more likely to be judged harshly.

When conducting your monologue search, don't forget about musicals. Contemporary musicals in particular now often feature monologues similar to those you might find in a straight play. Browse the list of musical theatre shows with teen roles here.
