Before You Start Looking For An Agent:
Important Things You Need to Know
- By far the most important thing to remember is that no agent should ever ask you to pay for representation before you have booked any work. There are many young performers who will do almost anything to become successful, and there are also many people who will try to take advantage of that. The only way an agent should get paid is by earning a percentage of what you earn. If they ask you to pay them up front, tell them to forget it.
- Sometimes "agents" get sneaky. They have a certain headshot photographer or training program that you MUST pay for in order to sign with them. This is another version of trying to get you to pay up front. Tell them to forget it.
- Remember that #1 says that an agent only makes money when you make money - so agents only want to sign with performers who make money! If you don't have much on your resume, you are going to have a difficult time getting an agent.
- Agents are picky, but you can be picky too! Don't be afraid to ask for references from other performers who work with an agent. If an agent doesn't want to let you talk to anyone they already represent, that is a warning sign. Tell them to forget it.
