How To Find Audition Material PDF Print E-mail
Written by triplethreat

Finding a Audition Song or Monologue

If you spend a little time on any musical theatre discussion board, including this site's board, you will quickly see a pattern. One of the most popular types of posts is "I need an audition song/monologue for...". If you look more carefully, you will also notice that most of these posts are asking for a song or monologue RIGHT AWAY because their audition is later this week or even tomorrow.

Are you going to find a really great song or monologue this way?

It's doubtful. Most of the people you will get advice from on a message board have never met you, never heard your voice, don't know your personality, and may or may not know the details of the audition and performance group involved. The other thing to consider is how can you be sure that the people who reply to your message really know what they are talking about? If you really want advice from someone, it should be someone who knows you well and someone you trust with performance-related questions. A former director, a coach, or a teacher.

Why do people post these requests so often?

In most cases they have one of two reasons:

1) They are lazy and/or don't know how to look.
2) They are so new to the scene that they don't have any knowledge on which to build.

What should you do instead?

The key to avoiding this "desperate" situation is starting early, even before the audition is announced. If you have fallen into the trap of trying to find a new song for each audition you go to, you are far less likely to succeed. The key is to look for audition songs when you DON'T need them, and to put them into all of your singing practices so that when an audition does come up, you can pick an appropriate song from your repertoire.
