Callback Anxiety Print E-mail

My last blog entry consisted of me describing two shows I was going up for. While one audition is still nine days away, the other happened two days ago. This was the Equity audition for the play Over the Tavern.

A little secret for those of you who didn't read my last blog- I'm not Equity. However, I am quite skilled at talking my way into auditions. :p While I would never crash an Equity audition, I really wanted to try out for this show, so, long story short, I called and got an appointment for the earliest time slow (1 p.m.)

It was a rather long commute (the theatre is about an hour away from my school and two hours from my house), but we made it there with time to spare. I did the usual filling out of forms, etc. I got a little nervous when the other people there seemed to know each other.

I got called back and shown to a small, very theatre-y room where the director was sitting behind a table. He asked me to sit down and began a sort of interview. He asked me what I like about the business, where I went to school, how I would get to rehearsals, etc. He was really nice, and I feel like we would work well together. Lastly, he asked me if I had a monologue. My usual one was perfect for this show, and I know it like the back of my hand, so I wasn't worried about the monologue. It went well and he laughed in all the right places.

After I finished my monologue, he said, "Well, you have got yourself a callback!" I wanted to jump up and down. While ALL callbacks are thrilling to me, this was was especially since I haven't officially audition in FOREVER. He talked over the schedule with me and gave me the callback date (Monday) and then we said good-bye.

I am soooo excited, but also incredibly nervous. I'll be going up against professional actors for one role (there's only one I can go for). The character I'm auditioning for cries in almost every scene, so I need to have that ready. I don't want to have to fake tears. I've been preparing as much as I can- reading as much of the script as I can get, reading reviews and synopses (synopsises? :p) I just hope that when Monday rolls around, I'll be ready.
