Singing Tips
( 17 items )
Singing is a large part of what separates musical theatre from "straight theatre". Because musical theatre performers are required to sing, auditions are held somewhat differently. Not only are you required to choose a song that reflects the style of show you are auditioning for, you must also prepare this song to performance level and perform it with an accompanist at the piano. What can often set you apart in these auditions is your ability to communicate a character while singing. There is an unfortunate trend among singers (particularly young ones) to think that their natural talent will "carry" them. They don't think it really matters what audition song they pick or how much training they have because they really believe that their talent is enough. While this might be true in your small community or highschool, it is NOT true in the professional world. To be truly competitive as a professional vocalist, you must have not only talent but also training, polish, and marketability.

It is very important that kids only use audition songs and monologues that are appropriate for their age level.
