  • Singing Tips  ( 17 items )
Singing is a large part of what separates musical theatre from "straight theatre". Because musical theatre performers are required to sing, auditions are held somewhat differently. Not only are you required to choose a song that reflects the style of show you are auditioning for, you must also prepare this song to performance level and perform it with an accompanist at the piano. What can often set you apart in these auditions is your ability to communicate a character while singing. There is an unfortunate trend among singers (particularly young ones) to think that their natural talent will "carry" them. They don't think it really matters what audition song they pick or how much training they have because they really believe that their talent is enough. While this might be true in your small community or highschool, it is NOT true in the professional world. To be truly competitive as a professional vocalist, you must have not only talent but also training, polish, and marketability.

All actors must become comfortable with dancing if they hope to be successful in musical theatre. Since Agnes DeMille choreographed the first staging of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma, dance has been an essential aspect of musical theatre as both spectacle and a method of expanding the plot. Today it is even more essential for musical theatre performers to have dance ability.

  • Child Actors & Teens  ( 8 items )
Child actors often have more professional opportunities open to them because new talent is always needed to replace those who have become too old, and roles are often double cast due to strict child actor labour laws. However, there are also unique difficulties for child performers, such as choosing age appropriate audition material. It is very important that kids only use audition songs and monologues that are appropriate for their age level.
