My Favorite Year Audition Song (Newbie Needs Major Audition Help!)
Written by lilygrimm128
So, I've decided to audition for a local private school's summer production of My Favorite Year, but I'm having trouble figuring out my audition material, as I am completely new to the process, this being my first audition for a musical EVER.

So, the music is fairly old-fashioned (the show takes place in 1954 and the music is written to match the time), so I came up with a few possibilities for my required 16 bars that would fit that musical genre. At first, I thought of two songs that I could do from The Sound of Music, namely Edelweiss or Sound of Music. Another song that fits the show's music is My New Philosophy from YaGMCB. My vocal range is basically that of a mezzo and my voice has a kind of sweet, happy sound to it, so these work fairly well with my range and vocal style.

The thing is, I still need to figure some stuff out before the audition next Friday.

  1. I need to actually PICK A SONG. Philosophy is suitably upbeat, but it was originally meant as a duet with Schroder, and there are some speaking parts in the song, and I'm still not quite sure what to do with the duet/speaking parts yet. I could always choose a section that does not have those in them, but then they could always ask me to do the entire song. For Sound of Music, I know the songs perfectly, as I've only seen the movie maybe 30 times, but I have another problem with all the songs...
  2. I'm having trouble with the part where it's only 16 bars, and it feels like wherever I cut the song off, it feels very abrupt. But then it's not really the end of the song, so that is to be expected. But then I can't just make my section stop at the end, because if they want me to sing the rest of the piece, I really can't.
Any kind of counsel about this would be ridiculously helpful, so please reply!

If you buy just the sheet music for that song, it has a yellow cover, go to musicnotes.com or sheetmusicplus.com, all the versions I've seen don't have schroeder's parts.

I'd go with the the first or last half of "Edelwiess", the cutoffs for that aren't too abrubt

If I did My New Philosophy, what do you think I should do with the speaking parts that don't really make sense without the Schroeder part (i.e. the "I can't stand it!" after Schroeder says the thing about Beethoven's Ninth Symphony)?

The sheet music for My New Philosophy is written for one person and the dialouge is edited some. Also the "No!" part is taken out.
