What Show Should I Do?
Written by lilygrimm128
I've decided that I'm going to get involved in a theatre program this year, but I think it would be great if you guys could help me decide which one.

My first option is Les Mis. It's being run by a certain youth theatre group in my state that specializes in programs running over school vacations. Pro: it's Les Mis, which is one of my most favorite shows ever. Con: A friend of mine has been involved in the program, and she says that doing it would be a bad idea.

I know that I would probably not get a lead role anyway, as this is my first time with the group, but she says that not only would I not get a lead, I would not get a role I would enjoy. This is because the group lets as many people as they can sign up (so they can get a lot of money: $300 per person or so), but then they only have one cast, which means that there are about 100 people in the show (when Les Mis generally has a cast of 40 people at most, because they use the same ensemble members in many different scenes). Everyone who signs up gets a part.

You're supposed to get to be on stage at least 3 times, and then you get a chorus part at best. My friend's mother even says that the group is not as professional as they THINK they are, and that they only give good parts to people who have been there a while. So, it doesn't matter how good you are. If you haven't been there for a while, your experience will suck. But still, it's Les Mis.

The second option is My Favorite Year, which is being run by a local private school for boys. Which means they need girls (like me) for parts. I don't know much about the show at all, but a friend of mine has heard of it and says it's not bad. She also believes that I would be more likely to have a good theatre experience in this company, because it's much more like community theatre. The people at this school actually know what they're doing theaterwise, and I can get the most out of even a chorus part, and they always need girls. Plus, it's much cheaper than the other place.

So what do you think? Sorry for writing so much (and being so confusing, no doubt), but I would be so grateful if you could give me your feedback. Thanks!

I would maybe go with the second choice, because a) you will get a better theatre experience b) You might get to do Les Mis again someday AND c) Do you really want a bad experience to ruin your favorite show for you?

I agree with Laura. I understand how you'd naturally want to go with your fave show. But, wouldn't being in a show with 100 people ( imagine the chaos) and at best getting a chorus role ruin any show you enjoy, let alone one that's your fave? I would definitley go with My Favorite Year. If they need girls, you'd have a great chance of getting a lead and you'd probably be in a much smaller cast and have a great expierence.

I'm agreeing with Laura and Johnna. Go for the other show.

Thanks you guys! I'm glad that you helped me to decide, because the audition for the second show is only about two weeks from today. So now I just need to figure out what song I'm going to use for my 16 bars... and get a headshot of some kind.

Do the 2nd show. "Les Miz" sounds like a rip-off to me. Another thing, I can't believe they charge YOU money to be in a show!!! I would never do a show where they charge me money. They should be paying me!!! The only exception is if you are in a school where you earn credits towards a degree/graduation!!!!!!!!
