FAVORITES!
Written by Elphaba2b
Okay, I'm a pretty decent singer. Nothing fancy, but with the right song, I can sound pretty darn good. My chorus teacher plays such favorites! She's given a girl who can't even sing a solo in the winter concert (RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER!!!) and TWO SOLOS in the spring concert!!! How how how to deal with FAVORITES!

quit the choir! or deal with it. Unfortunately, we do have favorites in this oh-so-unfair world of performing. Just keep trying, she'll see your deserving soon enough.

Whoever said showbusiness was fair!

Folks lose solos or roles in shows all the time to people that are less talented. Sometimes people get parts because they are prettier, more handsome, taller, shorter, skinnier, fatter.

Decisions are also based on "how easy it is to work with the person". That person may just be a nicer or easier person for the chorus teacher to work with. The last person in the world a teacher wants to work with is a Diva type, or brat, or someone with a BIG ego, or a student who thinks they know more than they do about how to do something. In school, a teacher may also pick someone just because they know something about that student that you don't. They may pick a student because that student NEEDS to be uplifted in some way to help them be more confident in life. Sometimes people get things because the family is rich and donates lots of money to the music department. Maybe parents get involved and the teacher is pressured. Or, it just might be as simple as being a "favorite".

I'm not saying that any of the above reasons IS the reason. The important thing is that with every audition, you have to learn when you walk out of the room to leave it all behind. Learn to be a supportive person. If you can learn to be a supportive friend to your competition, your beauty from the inside will start to show. It will reflect more and more as you mature. You will have more friends and have more fun. You won't be consumed with anger (wasted energy). Don't ever be the person who cuts down others. Always be the positive person who builds up others. It will change you into a person who not only helps others, but also helps yourself. Because you will also become a more confident and happy person. Which is the type of person that your friends as well as teachers, directors, choreographers, music directors, etc. want to be around and cast in their shows -- and work with on solos for choir concerts. Talent isn't always the most important thing. Be the best you can be as an all around person.

I had a choir director that played favorites...i was one of them, so of course people were jealous and would gossip, but at least i was actually good... there was this one favorite who was favored even more than me and she COULD NOT sing. There is always (usually) going to be favorites (good or bad). Just try to deal with it, because in the end it is talent that matters.

I know how you feel. i think jbug said it all. its not always fair, but the more you can learn to be happy with your part(whatever it may be) the more teachers, diectors, etc. will see you can do a great job no matter what part you have. I am lucky enough to have a chior teacher who is completely against playing favorites(which is unfortunate for me, cause im one of her favorites) but she gives me solos every once and a while. anyway, it will come across as a plus to your choir teacher if you are mature about it and just do the best with what you are doing in the concert.

I completely agree. My director has a 100% favorite (whom he gave one of the leads!) just because she's his daughter's best friend!

It's difficult, because in my art class, the art teacher is mean to everyone else, but is very nice to me because she liked my sister. I feel really bad, because I'm not trying to be a favorite, it just happened!
