I just blew it at NYSSMA.
Written by Jessica x0

I had NYSSMA today. You sing a song for a judge, and you sight read, they judge you.

This is my first time, I did How Are Things in Glocca Morra? I did pretty okay on that, but I BLEW IT on the sight reading. I kept getting the words wrong (Fa, Mi, Re, etc), and I kept going flat on the Mi. It was so bad he made me RE DO IT, and was correcting me. I didn't even know judges could do that! He said I had a nice voice though...

So when I came out I started crying, and I was just really upset. So I qwas just really pissed off, then when I came home I called my voice teacher, and she made me feel better.

Out of a 28, I think I'm gonna get a 25 or so. Ugh. I wanted a perfect so bad. If we got a perfect, we were allowed to perform our solo for the select chorus concert. There goes that opportunity.

EDIT: Apparantly, is wasn't just me he was mean to. During someone elses song he was hacking up a lung, and didn't stop until he got his coffee, and as he was finishing his coffee, he slurpled the way through one of the kids songs. And he made most everyone re-do their song. My teacher said it was arbituary (sp?).

aw, it's okay. I suck at auditions and still get actual parts. Hope you get it anyway! smilies/grin.gif

Is that like All-State? Because All-State really sucks to audition for. I had to do the same thing this November, and I didn't do so great. Sight-reading is really hard! Especially when you're nervous. I remember, I was supposed to start and end on the same note, and somehow my last note was lower than the first one! Eek!

Did you have to do tonal memory? I hate tonal memory with a passion. They played it only two times for me, and it was really fast. I remembered NOTHING. Like, I turned to the judge, sang the first three notes and said "Yeah, I can't do any more of that."

To make a long story short: I feel your pain. Also, voice teachers can be very comforting.

No, not all state. That's not until HS, I'm only in 7th grade. NYSSMA is new york state musical association. I did the music festival. I did Level III Voice.

i'm sorry, but if the judge wanted you to redo it and was correcting, it sounds like he was trying to give a second chance.

I totally feel your pain, last year at NYSSMA my sight reading was awful. I got full points off for it. I hope this year it'll be better (my NYSSMA festival isn't for a few more weeks)

I am sorry, that is too bad. On the brightside, you are only in 7th grade, so you have a long career ahead of you and many other opportunities. Keep on trying your best and progressing!!! Don't ever give up!

Tonal memory is when the judge plays a recording of a melody twice and then asks you to sing back as many notes as you remember. I think it's really hard because they play the notes really quickly. When I did the tonal memory part, I was still trying to remember what the first four notes were the second time my judge played through it.

I don't know how you would go about preparing for something like that. It's not the melody from a song or anything, it's just a bunch of random notes.

I agree with xavier- at callbacks at one company, it's good if they tell you to redo a scene and tweak your character because they see your potential. That is rude of him to slurp his coffee, etc., though.

And I agree with Xavier and Ali. Correcting you on things you are doing wrong is a good thing. It shows they want you to succeed. The same goes for if they ask you difficult questions about characterization and whatnot. If they don't think you're good, then they don't waste their time on you.

Don't worry about it! I auditioned for this fat director, and he was a moron. Don't let 'em get ya down, kid!
