Help? Please?
Written by operaghost

Ok, so I'm auditioning for Little Shop of Horrors in a little less than a month. I need a 1-2 minute monolouge and at least 16 bars of song. Any tips?

Oh, yeah. This might be helpful: I'm a 16-year-old white female. Range isn't really a problem.

The lead girl is a blond bombshell type. Marilyn Monroe look with a high squeeky voice like in the movie "Singing in the Rain" (the movie star diva role). Unlike the character from that movie, the character in "Little Shop..." has a heart of gold. There is a stage version of "Singing in the Rain". I am not familiar with any added songs that are not in the movie, but maybe you can check it out. She doesn't sing in the movie version. Also, check out "Guys and Dolls" - the role of Adalade (can't spell the name). She has the same kind of voice and has perfect songs for "Little Shop...." She is very much like the character in "Little Shop". Maybe there is something that can be turned into a monologue from that script also. In my acting class (professional in Hollywood) we sometimes turn songs into monologues. Then there is "Victor/Victoria". I can't think of the name of the character I'm talking about, but she was the blond bombshell played by Leslie Ann Warren in the movie. The character was jealous of the Julie Andrews character because her boyfriend fell for Julie Andrews. So try to do the song more sweetly than the character of the show. She has a song called Chicago, Illinois. Sorry the character names escape me, but that song is really fun and if done in a sweet way could be very effective also. Break a Leg!

Hey there!i'm around you in age, so i hope i can kind of see where your coming from...auditions are freaky, for one thing smilies/smiley.gif The show itself is very old school rock-y, kind of...fifties-ish sounding? It sounds a tad like rocky horror, if you know that show. A lot of the singing is kind of a doo-wop style, except for the main girl, Audrey, which is very much a character role. She has a nasally tone, and a very pop voice; techniques include scooping and vibrato, if you want the technical terms. A couple good songs: Audelaide's Lament from Guys and Dolls. Something from Grease might be nice. Look for fifties style shows. And as for monologue, I would suggest, if it is a regional theatre audition, looking up a comedic monologue in a book-a ditzy, character-actress one! hope this helps a bit! you can message me if you want more help as well.
