a little disappointed
Written by broadwaybaby13
ok, so im in rehearsals for the music man at starlight theatre. I was cast as a member of the chorus, but of the about 50 people that were cast in the childrens  chorus, only about 20 of us, who were randomly selected might i add, are actually in all the chorus numbers. I, along with the other 29 that were not selected, are in the overure and iowa stubborn and thats it. We skip down the stage for the last few bars of the wells fargo wagon if thats even worth counting. Now I know that there are no small parts, only small actors but its disappointing especially when youve been in the chorus in every show youve done. I also feel bad that my family members are spending 30 dollars a ticket to see me and im in the show for about 5 minutes altogether.IDK, i just needed to vent.

I don't blame you for being disappointed-- I know that I would be too! Just try reminding yourself that, if you really and truly love to perform, it should not matter who you are in the show, as long as you are IN IT! Yes, your family will be paying a lot of money to only watch a quick performance by you, but that's why they're FAMILY! They want to see you on stage no matter what!

P.S. Also, keep thinking positive: you can't be stuck in chorus FOREVER unless you quit. One day, you WILL get a larger role, I promise. Hey, once you're done with this chorus part, that means you are one role closer to a larger one!

Hay, it still goes on your resume! Watch and learn. In the mean time, this will show your family how much you love being in shows. Maybe you can talk them into letting you have more training - like singing, dancing and acting classes!!!!!! Prove your dedication and maybe things might happen for you on the family front! Be dedicated and work hard. Next time, you might get cast in something better! Don't be sad - especially in front of the director at the theatre. When they block the numbers you do get to be in, try to get yourself right in the front!!! smilies/wink.gif

I know how annoying that is. When I was in Miracle on 34th Street, the chorus sang one song, danced to another, and we came out for the curtain call. (Well, we also sang Christmas carols in the lobby before the show, if that counts) Granted, the tickets weren't $30, but I had relatives traveling a few hours to come see me sing one song. (I was too old to be in the dance, since I was one of the only high schoolers in the chorus.) I was dedicated, didn't complain, and gave everything I could to that one song. A couple weeks before the show, they picked solos, and I was given one of them. When we went to sing our song for the head director, she pulled me aside afterwards and told me that someone had dropped out and offered me their role. It was just two lines, but still... So hang in there! Show them that you care, and that you're going to have fun with whatever you're given. It will pay off. Maybe not in this show, but at some point it will help you out! smilies/smiley.gif

Surprisingly I was in the same show as you in middle school and felt the same way, even if I was in all the chorus numbers. There were almost about 140 other people in the cast, and I was always in the back. I was only visable during Wells Fargo. I know it's not fun. And I too have only been in the chorus for every show I've been in. It's hard to get out of the thought that you will only be the chorus forever. But someone will eventually notice that you're ready for something bigger, and that will only happen if you are dedicated to that chorus role you had in The Music Man (or any other show)! When you run across that stage for Wells Fargo, do it with all the passion and energy in the world! haha, it sounds rediculous, but it's much more better than glumly walking across the stage.
I really realized how important this is while performing the show i'm in currently (chorus - The Pajama Game). I have the smallest chorus role in the show (i wasnt cast as a dancer), so I was bummed at first. But I thought why mope round onstage while I can always shine as much as I possibly can in this small-small role? I made up my own little character, and trust me, it will help wonders, people I knew in the audience told me later that I really stood out or I was adorable, but most importantly they said it looked like I was having oodles of fun. And I'm really NOT a self-centered person, but I felt great about this, any actor would.
I understand you're only onstage for about 5 minutes, and making up your own chorus character (and doing it well) won't show up on your resume, but you will feel much better and it WILL help you get those bigger roles smilies/cheesy.gif
Sorry, this is probably reeeeaally long.
