Peter Pan Audition...
Written by Elphaba2b

Okay, I've been SO bored lately because I haven't been in a show since May. I FINALLY came across an advertisement for an audition for "Peter Pan." Problem is, I auditioned for the same company before, and I wasn't impressed AT ALL! The fees were THROUGH THE ROOF, the director was rude and snappy (he yelled at a little girl for not wanting to sing because she was sick! She was like 4!), and didn't give me ANY feedback whatsoever. The last time I auditioned, it was my first audition EVER, and I wasn't prepared to sing (I assumed they'd give a piece from the show. Hey, it was my first audition!). He didn't give me any time to look through some sheet music he had in a box. But it's the only audition for a long time (we only have 2 or 3 local theatre groups). It didn't work out because the rehearsal theatre was 20 minutes away.

My point is, I don't know if I should audition or not.

YOU have to PAY to be in a show??????????????? They should be paying you. I would never PAY to be in any show unless it was for school credit. In other words, getting a grade and it going on my transcript towards a degree.
On top of that, someone yelling at a 4 year old is deplorable!!!!!!!! The director is into power trips and totally unprofessional. The director is abusive. So, unless it is a different director, I wouldn't audition. A director like that should not be allowed to work at any theatre. If there is a Board of Directors for this theatre company, they should be complained to and told that in the future, you would not be attending any shows there. Hitting them in the pocketbook is a good way to see change. Word of mouth should go out against community theatres and directors like that.

A lot of companies charge to be in their shows. I know one of the ones I work with does, but it's for costume rental and/or cleaning and purchase of the massive sets. Most theatres generally ask you to sell an ad, but some charge a fee instead. It's not that outrageous as long as it's a decent price. One company in this area charges several hundred, plus costumes, but they're one of those pay-for-your-role type theatres. None of the other theatre people like them.

As for the director, that is wrong. I've seen some mean staff members before, but that's just crazy.

Abuse is abuse. Women put up with abusive men beating them up too, but it doesn't make it OK. Mental or physical, it should never be tolerated. I've seen directors get mad at people because the actor or someone isn't doing their job. Tension can build up as you come closer to the wire. But there is a difference between what that director did and getting mad at someone who didn't do their job.

As for paying, I've been in tons of community theatre and never paid a cent other than furnishing my own costume/shoes that I already owned or pieces that I've bought or made. But that is as far as I've paid. In all those cases, if I didn't do that, it would still have been OK, as it still would have been furnished for me. I've never paid for a role or forced to pay for a costume, set or props. Oh yes, I've used my own make-up.

I think it's okay for companies to charge a small fee to be in a production for costume and makeup, but this company charged to be IN the production AS WELL as a costume and makeup fee!
