when it rains, it pours...
Written by BrigantineMagnolia

Through one of those friend of a friend type things (the friend of a friend of an ex of an ex co-worker.... how's THAT one?? :)  )  I came across a great theater opportunity. I have been lamenting my lack of theater life- I've auditioned for the professional theater in the area, but they are renowned for being very clique-y, and was not cast for whatever reason. I knew of another theater in town, but they seemed sort of... dubious. Shady. They mostly put on self-written shows, and have a weird casting relationship with another, very dysfunctional theater group in town. Never seen anything with either group (somehow just kept missing the shows, through work or forgetfulness). BUT I talked to someone who works with the shady theater and it turns out it's not so shady after all. They recently had auditions for a show and through the above fourth-hand relationship, found out they were still looking for some more people.

I just talked to the director today, and he basically offered me a large part on the spot. something weird going on with the girl he originally cast in the part... not sure what politics or drama is going on there, but I'm reading over the script and calling him on monday. Just trying to figure out if i can do the schedule with something I already had planned for one week in the summer (house-sitting for a friend... who happens to live 60 miles from the theater!).

Plus... one other things is kinda weird... I'm not really the physical type for the character. She is supposed to be small and short, as several references are made to her size, and I'm... not. I'm about 5'8" and, well, I'll just say definitely not SMALL. Not huge, just not small. So I'm not sure how the director was going to get around that.

AND... I don't want to be THAT girl- the one who didn't audition and waltzes into a big part, and half the cast hates her because she took the other girl's role and half the cast loves her... because she took the other girl's role. ;)  Might not be the best way to break into the scene.

I guess I should've post this in a forum, but if you'd like leave me some comments with opinions on my concerns, I'd appreciate it.

Only you can really judge if you should do it. Sounds like they are desprate to cast anyone. The last thing I'd worry about is what others in the cast think. Just be nice and friendly and don't be a prima if you take the part.

Don't overthink the "I'm not small" thing too much. I have done Seussical with a female Jojo and a female Cat and The Wizard of Oz with a 24-year old Dorothy. They cast the people who show up.

As far as that, "I don't want them to hate me..." business, that is THEIR problem. It is not like you waved a pile of money in front of the director's face and said "I want to be in the show, but I don't want to audition"! if they are "haters" they would find some other reason to hate you. They may LOVE you, because you are the one that saved the show.

I am glad to see that you are just and neurotic as all of the rest of us actors. Let me tell you wnat I tell every other neurotic actor (myself included): "Shut Up and Sing" :-) Don't second guess yourself out of a wonderful theatre experience.
