| So I had two auditions today... one was for a play, one for a musical.
The musical one was first. It was for the musical Jon Doe, which I think has only been done locally. It's a rock opera, and I was desperately trying to find a good rock song to sing. But the problem is that I am really not a rock singer- being in Tommy killed my voice because I don't know where to place my voice to sing like that. I was actually going to do a song from Tommy, one that didn't hurt my voice (none of the songs I sang- go figure), but I only have the vocal music (no piano) and the person who was going to give it me's scanner broke. So that was nixed. I eventually just decided to sing my ballad from Chess. This turned out to be a good choice because they didn't really specify what they wanted us to sing and just wanted to hear our voice in the best song possible- which, for me, was the song I sang.
My audition itself went pretty well. The director was a guy who I took two classes from a few years ago. I ended up singing both songs that we in my binder. I didn't know we could sing two, or I would have picked two more contrasting ones- these were both kind of ballad-y, though they showed off different parts of my range. MY middle range was a little screwed up- that always happens during allergy season- but my songs went pretty well, even though the painist was kind of playing whatever he felt like. However... they didn't seem impressed. So, I really don't know what to think.
The second one went much better. This was the one that I was urged to come to after I couldn't be cast in the theatre's last production, due to how young I look. I was pretty nervous because the guy who asked me to come was on the casting committee and I really wanted to live up to his expectations. Another lady from the last casting committee was there, too. The show was Dearly Departed, which is a Southern comedy. Therefore, we had to use Southern accents. It's quite funny because the guy who asked me to come has only ever heard me audition once with my usual accent- all the other times I've had a Southern or British accent. My accent was al right- it slipped a few times. Everyone else's was good, too. I got to read for a couple of characters. The one I am going for- the only one I can play, really- I only got to read for once, and she had one line in that scene. The good thing is, there were other girls who could have read for her and they only had me do it. I was kind of embarrassed though, because the girl is supposed to burp in the scene, and I can't burp on cue. So I tried and I made this really gross spitting sound... yuck.
But... I GOT A CALLBACK! So I'm going back tomorrow night. Maybe I'll get a summer show after all! |
