HELP!! DIRECTOR PROBS!
Written by chrissyH

OK. So I have this director who is...well, satan in my mind. I won't say who it is because there is a good chance that some of you may know them. This person cast me in December as Consuela in WSS. We started rehearsing choreography in April and tonight she decided to cut me and another girl from all dance numbers. Ok, I don't suck at dancing. I'm not an amazing dancer and I haven't danced since the moment I left the womb but I'm good. If she took me out because I was messing up and she was getting on to me a lot I would understand. However, that is certainly not the case. To make things more complex, she cast too many girls because she kept adding people at the last minute. THOSE people get to dance but not me, who has been here since April. Also, the people who are dancing instead of me aren't doing that well (some of them are not getting it at ALL) and I was not stumbling over any choreography. I also just bought my $60 character shoes that I'll never wear again after this show (she is having them painted to match our clothes) expecting to actually dance in them. Everyone is afraid of her and she only likes people who are strictly dancers (like herself) and of course nobody will question her or stand up to her. Nobody I've talked to has any explanation for her bizarre behavior except that she is clearly out of her mind. Anyway, I'm super stressed and do not know how to handle this. I don't think there's anything I can do but if you have advice I'd like to hear it.

Thanks so much for reading!!!

I recently worked with a director who was... difficult... so I understand how you are feeling.

What you need to do, for your own mental health, is continue to act level-headed and responsible, even though she may not be.

I would very calmly, at an appropriate time (NOT in the middle of rehearsal), ask her why you were cut from the dance numbers. Is there something you should work on for next time? Approach it as if there is actually something you can learn from this situation. If she can't give you a straight answer, it will be painfully obvious who has the problem. smilies/wink.gif At least that will give you a little piece of mind.

Struth. I second everything Triplethreat has already said...confront calmly and at least you will know who is being professional. Good luck.

You can always paint your shoes black after they're painted. You'll still be able to use them, don't worry.
Otherwise, you can cover them neatly with masking tape and have that painted.
