HELP!! Guys and Dolls!!
Written by madi2008

Hi everyone I am having a bit of a dilema.  I am auditioning for Guys and Dolls for my community theatre and I am going for the part of Miss Adelaide.  I am not sure what song to sing.  I am debating between "somewhere that's green" from little shop or "I'm going back" from Bells Are Ringing.  I feel that "somwhere.." showcases the character but "I'm going back" showcases more of my vocal range and belt.  I don't know what to do.  Also, if anyone has any other sugesstions I would love to take those too.

Thank You so much for all your help

if you can only do one, i would do the piece that is closest to the character you want. I don't know the range for adelaide, but somewhere thats green has a nice sound to it. sure it's great to show off your high e-flat (or whatever) but if adelaide never sings above a c (or whatever) it may not matter. does that make sense?

when I played Adelaide in community theater, I came from a 'classical' voice background, and the directors kept telling me I was singing too pretty! they wanted it more real, more gutsy, more character-y (if that's a word!). So go with something that showcases acting and character over voice. Her parts aren't very difficult.

Just a few ideas that popped into my head... here's a list of a few "character-y" type songs I can think of that might be good audition pieces.
"When You Got It, Flaunt It" - Producers
"I Caint Say No" - Oklahoma
"Popular " - Wicked (Overdone for sure, but a great song!)
"Spanish Rose" - Bye Bye Birdie
"You Can't Get a Man With A Gun" - Annie Get Your Gun

Best Wishes on your audition!! Have fun!

What Chris Edwards says is true. Go with the song that is closest to the character you want. Check out the show "Anything Goes" In an older version of the show, the role of "Bonnie". She sings great songs called "Heaven Hop" and "Let's Step Out". Then in the newer version (with Patti LaPone) the character is called Erma (don't know why they changed the name). She sings some different songs. Anyway, listen and see if you like them.

In the "Anything Goes" 1987 revival, Emma sings a song called "Buddie Beware". It's probably a great song choice for Adelaide.
