| This past Saturday, I had an audition for The Sound of Music, which I have wanted to be in for years. I love the music, love the movie, love the time period, and just love the story. I scheduled an audition in January and have been looking forward to this audition ever since.
My audition was scheduled for 1:30, so I cancelled my prom hair appointment (psh, who needs to get their hair done when there's an awesome musical to audition for?) As it turns out, my friend Brynn was also auditioning, which was cool.
I got there about half an hour early, filled out the form, and talked to my friend until we were called in. We could hear the 8-11 year olds through the wall- some of them were AMAZING! Finally, they all trooped out and the director, who I know from the theatre's summer camp, came out and read our names off a list. Mine was first, and the second person was a girl I knew from the summer camp. We went into the room (the audition was held at the neighboring hotel due to there being a matinee on the actual theatre stage at that point) and sat in the chairs on one side. The director explained where we were to stand and introduced to the pianist, who seemed very nice. We ended up sitting in our order, so I was first. I sang It Might as Well Be Spring from State Fair. I wasn't really nervous, which kind of freaks me out, but I was a little worried because even though I know the song forwards and backwards, I suddenly couldn't remember the one note. So I got up there and the pianist played it a bit faster than I would have liked, but it still worked. The director seemed to enjoy it- they did State Fair about five or six years ago- that's actually how we got our State Fair souvenir cups this summer, from them- so she probably knew it. She let me finish my "excerpt", which was especially cool because the limit was 16 bars and mine was about 24... and because she didn't let a lot of the people finish. It didn't go as well as I would have liked, but I think I showed some good character.
Something funny about this audition- generally, as far as I've experience, people who are really confident as they go up for their song as usually some of the better singers. But at this auditions, almost everyone seemed extremely confident... and then they would sing. Don't get me wrong, no one was bad at all, but they'd march up there and then you couldn't hear them. It was just kind of weird to me. But I guess it's good that they are confident.
After all 20 kids had gone (I was happy to see that there was a 17 year old boy and a 19 year old girl there- I hate being the oldest), the director said we'd get a letter either way in about a week. If we get a callback, we also get sides and music, so I'm thinking it will be pretty obvious what the answer is when I get the envelope, LOL. I'm not expecting anything, especially since it wasn't as good as it usually is- felt kind of mediocre about it- but I would love to at least get a callback. They sound like fun. I'm going for Leisl understudy (they have a regular one already) and Louisa. I love SOM!
After the audition, I went home to get ready for my senior prom! It's funny that I was so excited because I always said I would never go to my prom, due to my hating dances. But I had so. much. fun. I think it was mostly because ALL of my friends (from school, at least) were there, and it was just a blast. After the dance, we all went to my friend Cory's house and watched Enchanted and Power Rangers, then passed out from exhaustion on her floor, LOL. It was a great time! |
