Fitting Theatre into "Life"... and Community Theatre politics
Written by megsings

I am getting ready for an audition next month for Secret Garden... So exciting! It has been some time since I was in a show and I am really hoping to get a part. I used to be really involved in the theatre... was an Ensemble member in various shows (West Side Story, Mame, Anything Goes, The King and I), a Bystander (Assassins),  Little Buttercup (HMS Pinafore), Julie (Carousel) and The Baker's Wife (Into the Woods)

I auditioned for this particular community theatre group twice last year and did not get a part (though I did get a call-back in the first audition and in the last audition I know I was probably too old for what they wanted since the cast they ended up with was comprised of almost all high school girls for West Side Story). One of the producers told me personally that she really enjoyed my audition and in advance told me of Secret Garden being a show for the next season... that I should come back and audition for this show for sure.

So, of course, I am amped about the audition, but worried that the community theatre politics and nepotism will keep me out again. I am new(er) to this town and haven't worked my way into the local programs yet. Frustrating... I know I'm good and having seen the productions they mounted last season, I could very easily have fit into the casts, or bettered them, frankly.

Before "life" got in the way of my extra-curricular theatre participation, I was a big fish in a small pond. Though musical theatre is more my passion than anything else, I have had many non-musical show roles and my resume is good... Got married, had a baby, work, work, work... moved half a dozen times... it's been hard to get back into it.

I just want to get back into the fun... it makes me so happy!  I am going to audition for the part of Lily and I feel like I'm in the Chorus Line in my head.. "God I hope I get it!" I have been working so hard over the last year to get back into shape, singing and practicing, getting my skills sharpened again. Any tips on dealing with the community theatre cliques? Getting back into it after a long hiatus? Anything?

Here's hoping for a good outcome! *crosses fingers, toes and eyes*

Ignore the cliques, focus on putting your best foot forward. Its hard to break into a new company. Show up early to auditions to chat with people, ask questions, etc. Break a leg and "I hope YOU get it!"
