Maria Problems
Written by andgadoline

Having to act. Acting becoming a nightmare. I am playing Maria in west side story and am in serious danger of being upstaged by my friend who is playing Anita extremely well.

How other than working really hard and sabotage can i possibly avoid this. Also my tony is awful, can't sing or act and is extremely camp, did a romantic scene with his back to me. Oh dear god help. MUST SHINE IN SOLO SOONGS e.g i feel pretty and the end scene

It's not your job to upstage or downstage anybody. It's your job to believably play Maria, just as it's your friend's job to believably play Anita. If Anita is meant to be some big and theatrical character, (I'm not familiar with WSS), then she should play her as such. If Maria's meant to be some quiet and practical girl, then let Anita "upstage" you as far as theatrics go.
A suggestion -- Get to know Maria better. Find someone (a friend, a fellow student) that is very similar to Maria and watch her body language, her speech patterns, everything. True theater fans appreciate an actor/actress who can make a human character come alive onstage in a sincere and realistic fashion.

Good luck!!!
