Who the heck is Coach Dunbar?
Written by Contralto Diva

The cast list came out for my youth theatre's production of Footloose today, and let's just say I wasn't too happy with the results.  I'm Coach Dunbar, and according to a website with character descriptions said that this person doesn't need to be a good singer or actor.  What the heck?  People  who are lousy singers got better parts than me...  I'll try to keep an open mind but it isn't going to be easy.

In the Footloose I was in the summer, Coach Dunbar is one of the adult characters. He is married to Eleanor (sp?) and does have to sing, our Coach sang in all the chorus numbers and doubled as a Cowboy in the BBQ Dance scenes in Act II and as a breakdancer in the opening number. Coach Dunbar is also is in several scenes. He's in the scene in the churchyard right after the opening number, in the bridge party scene at the reverand's house and the Town Council Meeting. I think his biggest bit is the Act I Finale. During his gym class, Ren comes in with a broken arm and Coach Dunbar doesn't excuse him from doing push-ups just because Ren is injured and actually Coach Dunbar says some nasty things to Ren in that scene. Once Coach Dunbar leaves, Ren's reaches his breaking point and decides to throw a dance. So actually, your character partially motivates Ren to sing "I'm Free". And BTW, Coach Dunbar's first name is Roger. Hope that helps a little.

A character description actually said doesn't require someone who can act? I can't imagine any character description saying that.

Apparently I'm oblivous to some stuff because I went back on that website I found, and it said character doesn't need to DANCE well, not act. ...my bad... (but that's a good thing because dancing isn't my strongest suit)
