Excited! and advice needed
Written by alltheworldsastage
So today one of my friends told me that a professional equity theatre near me is going to do the Sound of Music next summer. Which naturally made me really excited, as I'd love to play Louisa or Brigitta and it's just awesome!!!!! I don't know if it'll happen, I couldn't find anything about it on their site. But if I can audition I want to be ready.

Which comes to my question-- is there any way I can make my voice louder? Some of you might have seen me asking that same thing this summer, but that was two days before my performance. I have the whole winter to prepare. Right now I'm taking voice lessons, I've been taking them for a year and a half. She made me start doing stomach crunches right away but I only really started doing them on my own this summer, and I've been doing 15-20 a day recently. And my voice isn't terribly quiet, it's just quiet. Not nearly enough to let me get Lousia. So, any advice?

Thanks for reading this!

Just try to get really good breath and support with your diaphragm as much as possible. A little trick that helped me was to take a loose piece of paper and try to hold it up against a wall using your breath. It helped me a lot. Hope I helped and break a leg at the audition!

Thanks! Yeah one of my co-actors showed me that excercise, it's really cool when you can do it.

Alot of your problem is just maturity. Strength will come as your body grows. Keep practicing.

Jbug's right- I was surprised to learn that age does affect your ability to project, but I wrote about my frustration with it in my Voice and Speech journal for school and my teacher wrote back, "Your age also has an affect on this."

Yeah, breath support is really important!!! So much of singing is just breathing! lol... also a LITTLE bit of nasal goes a long way and really helps you to sound louder! But also keep in mind your voice doesn't fully mature until you are in your 30s! Break a leg! smilies/smiley.gif

Thanks so much. I just have to keep remembering that.
