Auditioning for a Film
Written by Kayla

Well, even though this is a musical theatre site and live theatre is what I love to do and all, I thought I would see if I could maybe get into a little bit of film. So, I sent my resume off to some casting places in Austin. (About 5 hours from where I live!) I didnt really expect to get emailed about an audition because my resume is completely made up of live theatre.

Then I got it.

About two weeks ago, I got an email to come audition for a short film and everything!

So, I went this past Sunday to audition. I was really nervous because I had never auditioned for a film before and didnt really know what to expect. I was the first one there! (My audition time was 9:45 and I got there around 9) And they got all my information and took my headshot and resume and then gave me a number. (1) And then literally two minutes later, they were calling me in there to audition! Which completely threw me off but I guess thats just the way it goes! Another thing that kind of made me nervous was that they did videotape it. You had to stand inside this little box and the camera was just staring you in the face.

But the people were so nice and just told me to relax and all that so I did and got to play to the director (dont worry, he told me to!) so that helped not having to stare the camera down. And, I think I did ok...definetly not the best I could have done (I had never auditioned in the morning before so was still fairly sleepy...darn!) but I think I did ok. I also noticed as I was walking out of the studio, that I seemed to be the youngest girl auditioning for the specific part.

Well, I got the email today...I didnt make it in the film but the director sent a personalized email saying how great a job I did. (about 3 times!) He also mentioned how out of about 236 submissions to audition, I was about 1 of 10 who got chosen to actually audition. Which really makes me feel good, knowing that my resume/headshot seemed to stand out. He also said he would like to keep my headshot and resume on file for future projects so thats also really exciting!

So, all in all, even though I did not get the role, I still had a great time auditioning and I gained a lot of experience for possible future film auditions.

That's great! Personalized e-mails are very rare, but great, so you obviously did well!

Great job!!!!! We are always the most critical of our own work. Were you able to get the director's name and business address? If so, you can send him new updated photo's and resume's as time goes on. Always remind him who you were in as short a note as possible, they don't have time to read anything long. If you are in something new - tell him what you are doing.

Wow that's really great. Congrats on making such an impression! I was wondering if you could tell me specifically what casting places you sent your resume to. I'm in Fort Worth and I'd love to get into film but there aren't too many chances around here.

I find all of the casting calls I send my information to at austinactors.net and shortfilmtexas.com. You're right, there aren't many opportunitys in the DFW area for film, but there are still some. (I have a film audition coming up in Dallas soon!) Most are in Austin if you want to travel that far. These are mostly short films but they are still a great way to get into film if you get cast as they send them to festivals, etc. Austin is a big film community. I hope I helped! smilies/grin.gif
