Going to go see... - 2007/08/24 08:56 I'm off to Ottawa today to see The Phantom of the Opera . It will be my first show on tour that I will see and the second broadway production (the first being Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a few years back). I'll probably post a review when I return tomorrow.

Bye!

Re:Going to go see... - 2007/08/24 13:15 Oh, I'd love to see Phantom. My sister saw the tour in Denver (she lives out there) because one of her clients gave her tickets. I was so mad. Psalm 42:8

All the world's a stage....

Currently: Ensign Cora MacRae in South Pacific
Just finished: The Ayah in the Secret Garden

Oh cool! I just wrote a review on the Las Vegas version of Phantom (it's shorter and slightly different). I haven't seen the full production yet, so I'm extremely jealous!

The Phantom! - 2007/08/25 22:23 Back from Ottawa! Hooray for tours! Well all that I can say is Wow! The production was very entertaining and I had lots of fun. I think though that I would of preferred it if I hadn't seen the movie before... it kind of wrecked some surprises but nothing major. Act One (mainly because of the movie) was a little boring A LITTLE but i really loved Act Two. We sat in Box 23 but I'm sure when we had bought our tickets we had bought some for Box 5 . It added to the fun (that we had box seats) because they talk about boxes in the musical.
All the performers sang well except that in the beginning I felt that the actress that played Meg had a little bit of difficulty... maybe it was an off day for her or maybe her voice wasn't well prepared... oh well, such is live theatre. The Phantom and Christine played by Steve (Steven?) Tewksbury and Sarah Lawrence were brilliant. What I loved about the difference voices of both Raoul and The Phantom was that The Phantom had a much more stronger, powerful voice than Raoul and It added well to the fact that the Phantom's the Angel of Music (or is he? up to you to find out!). Please ask questions about the show. It's still fresh in my memory.

Re:The Phantom! - 2007/08/26 16:02 The chandeleir fall was quick. It doesn't fall at the same time compared to the movie. The chandeleir was above people in the center of the first row of the orchestra and I thought that it would fall on them! Of course it didn't but went more diagonally towards the stage. When it hit the stage I think some fireworks sprang from it and the chandeleir lights went out. It doesn't break because during the second act it goes back up where it was where the lights turn blue for masquerade.

Kim Stengel portrayed Carlotta Giudicelli and I read in the playbill that she is the longest-running Carlotta worldwide with over 4000 performances!!! She had a great accent and terrific comedic timing. She was so funny when Andre or Firmin tells her that "These things do happen" (when she almost got knocked from a falling prop) and she replies saying that "This will not happen" (referring to her voice and her portrayal in Hannibal the opera) and twists her scarf in such a funny manner and leaves with a short Piangi following her walking funny.

Re:The Phantom! - 2007/08/27 12:40 I also forgot to mention that after the show I really wanted to get autographs so I asked directions to the stage door and got there with my parents. There was hardly anybody! Maybe 7 people were there but they were family or friends of people in the cast/crew! This was the first time I ever stage doored and I was hesitant to ask people to sign because I was the only one there for that ! So instead I just watched the actors go by and tried to recognize them (which I have to tell you is hard if your not sitting in the orchcestra during the show and the playbill only had nine photos of the leads (the phantom wasn't even there (probably because he's an understudy))) and I tried to have fun and not show my disappointment. We were about to leave (I kinda had enough) when this person walking with her bike came over to us and asked us if we were waiting for family or friends in the show I replied saying we were trying to recognize people. Then she said that she was sure we would never recognize her and I couldn't... but guess what! She was Sarah Lawrence who played Christine! I was so surprised! Then she called Raoul over to us and I recognized him and we talked a bit and I asked for autographs so I got some! I was too much in shock that I forgot to take a picture with them oh well at least I got autographs. After they left we decided to leave as well but then Rebecca Judd who plays Mme Giry came over to us and she autographed as well! I was so happy! The fact that Sarah came over to us highlighted our short trip to Ottawa and I would love to go back and see the show with her in it again and again and again!

Re:The Phantom! - 2007/08/27 12:43 The chandeleir fall was quick.

Really? I just saw Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular (a flashy, 95-minute version) and the chandelier rising/falling were quite drawn out processes. It took the entire overture for the "old chandelier" to rise into the theatre and connect in the beginning!

When it hit the stage I think some fireworks sprang from it and the chandeleir lights went out.

Yeah us too. We had A LOT of fireworks. Nearly blinding.

BUT STILL AMAZING!

wait you got autographs?!?! AWESOME!

Re:The Phantom! - 2007/08/27 12:50 yah in the beginning it took the whole overture to get it up there. You're talking about the instrumental song after the auctionner says something like "How about a little illumination? Gentleman!" right? But when the chandelier fell I found it fast.

That's the one. But yeah, from what I remember our chandelier wasn't the quickest thing to fall. It sort of swung down at an arc and almost gracefully crashed into the stage.

Very well done though. It's not like I was sitting and watching it in slow motion.
