Anne & Gilbert - 2007/08/15 10:57
I finally had a chance to see "Anne & Gilbert" at the first non-PEI production last night.
Usually I don't review shows on the site, I just put my thoughts on the show pages, but I wanted to drop a quick note about how proud I am of this new Canadian piece.
The book does an absolutely incredible job of capturing the characters of the 2nd & 3rd novels. It's very funny. But what really impressed me was how closely the music is woven into the script - most of the songs are actually furthering the plot rather than commenting which for me is truly the sign of a well-written musical.
If you are interested at all, you can find clips of some of the songs on the official site: http://www.anneandgilbert.com Not all songs are there, and most of my favorite songs don't have clips but also they have added a few tunes and fixed things up a little since the original recording was made. I also have to say that for the most part I liked the voices of the cast I saw last night far more than the ones on the recording. You can hear bits of all of them on iTunes if you are in Canada - I don't know about the US.
I'm working on the show page, but it's still very much in progress: http://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/shows/annegilbert.html
