Movies Into Musicals - 2007/08/12 11:45What are your thoughts. It seems there isn't an original idea for musicals anymore.
While many are good, many are NOT. Hairspray being the exception - movie to bway musical to movie...
I would just love to see Bway concentrate on NEW ideas. It is getting WAAAAY too overdone. I mean there is talk of making SPIDERMAN a musical! Puhlease!
Anyone else feel the way I do about these? Currently Directing - Sweeney Todd (March 2008)
Currently In - Jan 11 - Feb 3 2008 Moonlight And Magnolias - Ben Hecht (non musical)

Re:Movies Into Musicals - 2007/08/12 13:03i know!! me too!! i mean, just disney is annoying. HSM is going on broadway, i heard. and i heard about spiderman, too, it's all an annoying mess. I saw legally blonde and i actually liked that a million time better than the movie (which i disliked a ton)-- the music actually was good! and they developed their characters properly. But i want to see new broadway, too. there is a new one written by Jason Robert Brown, 13, going on in 2008 (my friend got a callback for it!!) and i'm quite excited for it.Maria

Re:Movies Into Musicals - 2007/08/12 14:18High School Musical isn't going on Broadway, (thanks goodness!) it's just touring. I saw it when it premired in Atlanta and it was ok, but still way better than the movie.I Rent a Wicked apartment on Avenue Q! (Unfortunatly, it's haunted by a Phantom) Sarah

Re:Movies Into Musicals - 2007/08/12 16:14Aren't there tonnes of musicals, not just contemporary ones, that are based on something? Be it an opera, movie, book, play... I think there are only a small handful that are "original" in the truest form.
I think if it's written and done well, so be it. Gone With The Wind, for instance, which is supposedly in the works, might be good. It's a story I can see working as a musical on stage, but if the music is no good or doesn't suit the setting, then I won't be interested.Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Crazy For You - Patricia Upcoming Auditions: Anne Of Green Gables - Anne, Diana

Re:Movies Into Musicals - 2007/08/12 23:25i know all about this. it's happening with movies too. (Based off the novel by... blah blah) Aren't there any original stories anymore?? Spiderman.... *shudders* I just hope they don't get any ideas for Harry Potter. Or anymore Disney movies. Alan Menken is a genius at broadway style scores, but all of them dont HAVE to go onstage. Though I really liked Beauty and the Beast. that's the only acception, because it was amazing and it saved broadway. haha*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:Movies Into Musicals - 2007/08/22 00:56I think one of the best/most successful movie to musicals is Thoroughly Modern Millie. I saw the play before I saw the old movie with Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing, and I absolutely adore both.
Has anyone else seen the movie? It's too cute. It has a few songs in it already. I love what they did with it when they put it onstage and it really gave the movie a re-birth. I mean, I would've never known it existed if I hadn't seen the musical.
Oh! And The Producers is like Hairspray: movie-musical-movie I can't comment on it too much, though b/c I've never seen it.
As for making POPULAR CURRENT hits into musicals - not such a good idea. I mean, Spiderman? Come ON! I can't agree with some of you about Disney, though. I love Beauty and the Beast and I'm excited to see The Little Mermaid if I can make it way back up to NYC. I'm all for putting the Alan Menkin/Howard Ashman Disney movies onstage b/c they're basically already full fledged musicals, but other Disney movies not so much...i.e. Tarzan...

Oh - one more thing...I'm on a roll...I really don't think I could take *sings to the tune of "Camelot" from Spamalot* Wing-ar-di-um! Leviosa! Wing-ar-di-um! I love the books, too, but singing during Quidach is like watching the kids in High School Musical 2 sing during a baseball game.
