'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 01:32 So I have my audition tomorrow for 'Into the Woods'! I'm going for the Baker's Wife. I think I've decided on my monologue and audition song. For the audition, we're supposed to bring a head shot, do an audition song, and a 6-8 line monologue.

I'm probably going to do "If You Believe" from The Wiz for my song, and the following monologue from The Wizard of Oz:

"Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage!
What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage!
What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk?
What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage!
What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage!
What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage!
What makes the Hottentot so hot?
What puts the "ape" in apricot?
What have they got that I ain't got?"

I totally didn't intend for them to both be concerning the Wizard of Oz! Anyway, do you guys think they fit with the characterization of the Baker's Wife? Any other suggestions, or suggestions on how to perform them?

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 02:10 The monologue seems kind of redundant and repetitive to me. Into The Woods is one of my favorite plays and I love how the Baker's Wife is both comedic and caring, with a bitter sense of humor. I think a more comedic monologue would suit you, but then again...

Auditions ARE tomorrow...

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 04:27 Yeah, I really want a comedic monologue too, but I'm having an extremely hard time finding a short, appropriate one.

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 05:11 There isn't much to do about it now, since going in with a monologue you haven't had time to rehearse is worse than going in with a poorly selected one, in my opinion.

Let this be a reminder that it is always important to keep a monologue repertoire on file - if you spend time finding monologues BEFORE you need them, then when auditions are announced you won't be scrambling to find something on short notice.

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 05:33 It's not like I'm just looking tonight. I've been looking for songs and monologues for weeks, but actually found it really hard to find good ones that fit me vocally, age-wise, and fit the character. The length of it has also been a problem, as there aren't many great monologues that are 6-8 lines or can be cut to 6-8 lines.

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 05:59 Pretty much everywhere. This site, googling 'free teen monologues', 'free comedic monologues', 'free female monologues', and simply 'monologues'. Pretty much anywhere I can think of.

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 06:16 How about the library?
Monologue books?
Reading plays with similar characters?
Asking your drama teacher for suggestions?

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 06:19 Sorry for the double post, but I can't find an edit button. I've also found the following two monologues, but I think the one from ASND is too depressing. Mostly, I just picked it because I've read the play, so I know what Blanche is feeling at that moment. I really like the one from 'Funny Girl', though, and it would be pretty easy to memorize. I've almost got it down already.

From 'Funny Girl':

"When you're gifted, then you're gifted.
These are facts, I've got no axe to grind.
Ay! What are ya, blind?
In all of the world so far, I'm the greatest star!
No autographs, please.
What? You think beautiful girls are gonna stay in style forever?
I should say not! Any minute now they're gonna be out! FINISHED!
Then it'll be my turn!"

From 'A Streetcar Named Desire':

"Funerals are pretty compared to death.
Funerals are quiet, but deaths not always.
Sometimes their breathing is hoarse, sometimes it rattles, sometimes they cry out to you, "Don't let me go!"
Even the old sometimes say it- "Don't let me go". As if you could stop them!
Funerals are quiet, with pretty flowers.
And oh, what lovely boxes they pack you away in!
Unless you were there at the bed when they cried out "Hold me" you'd never suspect there was struggle for breath and bleeding.
You didn't dream, but I saw!"

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 08:23 i think out of the ones that you have you should do the 'Funny Girl' one. i don't feel as if the cowardly lion is right for you at all. i believe you need to stay within your own sex in a monologue also, the Funny Girl one has more of the baker's Wife personality than the Cowardly Lion. just my two cents @ 1:20 am.

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 20:45 I agree with Holly, I think the Funny Girl monologue is the best one for the character of the Baker's Wife -Georgia

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 23:39 Thanks everyone! I decided on the Funny Girl one as well. I'm having so much fun with it.

Anyway, I'm so nervous. My audition is in about an hour and a half, and my throat has been giving me problems today. I think it might just be nerves, but I am still getting over a cold I had last week. I'm constantly having to clear my throat and if I breathe in too much air I automatically cough. I already drank some tea, but it has pretty much worn off already.

Any quick easy-to-do-at-home suggestions?

Re:'Into the Woods' Audition Tomorrow! - 2006/12/20 23:46 squirt a mess load of honey down your throat and then do a breathing excerise to calm your nerves. breath in for 4 counts and blow out for 8 and just keep heightening the numbers... within a limit of course.
