shoe question - 2007/07/13 18:23i have a pair of pink capezio split sole ballet slippers. i think that the costumer wants black shoes for our show-- the decision has not been made but i think that is the direction leaning. for some reason i am having trouble finding black in the store. i can find them on-line but i don't know if i want to risk not getting them in time-- this will be the one time my mail doesn't get delivered!
anyway, i know i could spray paint my shoes black, but is shoe polish less permanent? i don't want to "ruin" my shoes. i do have black jazz shoes but they might not "fly" if everyone else is wearing ballet shoes.

Re:shoe question - 2007/07/13 18:35If you already know your size for that style and brand, then I would try to order them from somewhere that will offer you quick shipping with tracking. If you do lots of theatre (and I know you do) it's really worth it to have shoes in both colours.
I suppose you COULD colour them, but I have seen people try this many times and it never looked good... Personally, I wouldn't risk ruining the shoes._____________ Kris MTA Admin

If it were me and I was playing the good one I think I would try to persuade the costumer to let me wear the pink ones to set myself apart from the bad narrator However we can't always persuade them to do what ever is most convenient for us
Can you tell that I've had to learn to manipulate the situation to suit my thrifty husband's needs?
Anyway I agree with Kris. If you think you'll need them in the future and you can afford them I'd get them in black, with next day shipping just to be safe. i wish i could use your idea, annie, but we feel like the director is not really doing a clear-cut good-evil thing. at one point, the other narrator and i thought we figured it out but it all sort of switched in the second act. we're not completely sure why there are two of us, but we still have a week and a half to figure it out. LOL! the way this guy is doing it is he has two little girls from "victorian time" stumble upon this huge book. the other narrator and i-- who are dressed genies appear and tell them the story. in the first act, the four of us can interact w/ joseph. in the second act we can interact w/ everyone b/c we become part of the story.... it's an interesting approach. a little Aida-ish.
anyway, the asst stage manager was surprised about black shoes for the girls so maybe we can get away w/ pink. actually, when we had our photo shoot the other day, the costumer indicated that he might not want black. indecisiveness drives me nuts! Re:shoe question - 2007/07/14 01:01Just as a general costumer type note (since I just love to share my knowledge with all of you), there are two ways to paint shoes. You can buy acryllic paint that is meant for leather and just paint it on with a brush in several light coats (we did this for CATS). There is also special shoe spray paint you can use, but again, light dusting of coats is the key for it not to flake off (this is what we used at school, though I don't think we ever did it to split soled dance shoes..). The flakes are inevitable with the first method, I believe (otherwise, they wouldn't need shoe people to repaint them!). Shoe polish will tend to turn the shoes an ugly grey non-colour, unfortunately.
That being said, I agree with buying a second pair in black, and pay the extra for next day delivery if you're worried! Maybe stress to the costumer your shoe situation and get him to make up his mind so you can make sure you have the right ones!
