Vocal Range question?! - 2007/07/09 01:28Okay, this may seem like an ignorant question, but I'll ask it anyway. I recently worked with my voice coach to find out what my range was, but I'm having trouble converting that into the number-letter system that everyone seems to be using now. I was wondering if someone could enlighten me?
My performance/marketable range (not my full range) is the G below middle C through the F two above middle C.
I'm thinking that the number represents the number octave, but can someone clarify? And tell me my range in those terms? Thanks! My Name Is: Lisa! And I'm fifteen! Upcoming Auditions:The Pajama Game Favorite Roles: Tumnus in Narnia The Musical & the Narrator (the Artful Dodger) in A Christmas With Scrooge.

Re:Vocal Range question?! - 2007/07/09 08:00I don't have a full piano (I have a 7 octave electric keyboard, which is just what I need) so the ranges are messed up, but I can tell you that it is the octave number. I'm pretty sure that middle C is C3.Psalm 42:8

Re:Vocal Range question?! - 2007/07/09 09:04It's ok you don't sound ignorant at all sweety! I'm going to school to be a vocal performance major & it's still hard for me to figure out so I usually cheat a little.
But yes, I know that F above high C is F6. & your low G would be G3. there ya go!
You're incredible lucky to have such a wide range Have you been working on it? Or is it natural?Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:

Assuming the F you are referring to is the one on the top line of the staff your range is G3-F5.
Hope this helps

Re:Vocal Range question?! - 2007/07/10 20:57G3-F5? I guess, that sounds about right. If I can get one more response (since I have gotten two different answers so far ), that would be wonderful! Re:Vocal Range question?! - 2007/07/10 22:15I think the discrepancy in responses is the confusion between which F you are referring to. If you're talking about the super-high-Queen-of-the-Night F, your range is G3-F6. However, I think you're talking about the F below that- so your range would be G3-F5.
If you're still confused, you should look at this wikipedia article on scientific pitch notation. (Which is the number system we're talking about) linkie!
Hope that clears this up a bit! Kris*~Kristina~*

Re:Vocal Range question?! - 2007/07/12 09:22Also, to add onto that, in the U.S. the C's start the octaves, not the A's. That would mean an A5 would be higher than a C5, so the A5 would be the high A just above the staff. I've seen a lot of people get confused about this.
