Re:Character Shoes - 2007/07/02 15:49 I would describe them as standard theatre shoes. They're mostly used for dancing. They are required for some musicals. You can also get them with taps. To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.

Re:Character Shoes - 2007/07/02 16:31 Character shoes look basically like this: http://www.freemotion.com/media/CharacterShoes

They are designed to look very basic with no embellishments and no specific time period. They can also be used as dance shoes and they can be purchased so that you can attatch taps.

If you're looking for character shoes, I suggest Capezio Jr. Footlight Character shoes. I bought them at eBay for $20 (which is an amazing price for Capezios) with removable taps. They're really comfortable and very easy to dance in.

Re:Character Shoes - 2007/07/02 16:44 I personally don't like the Capezio Jr Footlight shoes because of the lining they put in. The lining is thick, and makes feet sweat really badly. I wore them without tights to one rehearsal, and the sweat made the light tan lining turn brown... They're really nasty now. The more expensive Capezios don't have the lining, and it's definitely worth it.

And if you've never own character shoes before, it's better to try them on in a dance store first. Dance shoes run in different sizes than street; it's generally one size up, but you can't do much dancing in shoes that don't fit!

Re:Character Shoes - 2007/07/03 11:49 Yes, definitely try them on before youo buy them- my characters are a size bigger than my street shoes!

I have three pairs of character shoes, and they're three different brands. MY black ones are Dance Distributers. These are my oldest, but they're only about a year and a half old. The bottoms are slippery (I tell my tale of woe in my last blog entry, LOL) and my feet hurt a lot after wearing them for several hours. My tan t-straps are Leo's, and they are very very comfortable, and not slippery at all. And i just got regular tan Capezios and paid a whopping $4 for them (my tale of joy in the same entry). I haven't used them yet, so I'm not sure how they are.
Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:Character Shoes - 2007/07/08 23:18 Don't feel silly about not knowing what they are.
Just last week I told all the females in the cast that they had to get Character Shoes, then I had a cast member come up to me and ask

"I am in the chorus so I am not sure what kind of shoes my character would wear, I did my character sketch and since she is a cheerleader I was thinking some sort of tennis shoe maybe?"

I just smiled and explained what they were in my soothing director voice. (yes directors have those)
