Theatre Drama - 2006/12/13 03:37 Okay, so I'm mad, and here's why...

Like a month ago, I trusted my friend with something VERY personal. This friend also happens to be the drama teacher's daughter. Although my "friend" swore she would keep quiet, she told her mother anyway. Long story short, I found out that my friend told her mother this and went to her mother. The drama teacher assured me that no casting decisions would be affected on her knowing this personal thing about me, and that she didn't thing lowly of me because of it.

A few weeks later, Music Man auditions came along, Middle school students were able to audition. As much as I hate to be cocky, I nailed that audition, and I was at the level, if not above almost everbody there. (around the school theatre department, some people say I'm the best one there.) So the list was posted, my name wasn't on it. I was told that I didn't "look the part" and in so many words that my boobs were to big. So I was like hmm... ok.. I guess...

I reviewed the cast list a few times and realized that this girl I'm in choir with. Kelsey made the show... I looked at Kelsey, and then the list, and then myself. Because me and kelsey are somewhat tight I asked her what size bra she wore.... and she told me that our sizes were pretty close. So yeah... I'm mad, and I'm not sure what to believe.

So what do you thinkyou thing that this was an act of unfair casting? Or am I seeing this through a blurred perspective?

Opinions? Anyone?

Re:Theatre Drama - 2006/12/13 03:55 Quite honestly I think someone needs to be dragged through the mud for casting based on looks, if this is indeed the case, particularly in middle school.

If I was your mother, I would be calling the principal to discuss why a teacher is openly telling students they are "too developed" to play a role. This is a body image issue that needs to be addressed with this director.

Even if this "personal" issue is the real reason for you being overlooked in casting, the very idea that body type would be an acceptable excuse is disgusting.

As for the sharing of secrets... let this be a lesson to you about who your real friends are. A friend will always keep their word to you unless yours or their personal safety is involved.

Go and find a director who will appreciate you, hun. You aren't worth all this junk. One of the most valuable things you can learn to do as a performer is to let things like this go. There will always be stupid people in this world and trying to understand them will not bring you any peace, it will only cause you added stress.

Re:Theatre Drama - 2006/12/13 19:00 That's really awful, I agree that either you or a parent should call your school to complain that you were told you were not cast in a school production because of the way you look. Sounds a bit like discrimination to me... ----------Emily----------

I'm going to have to agree with pretty much every word of this post. Especially in such an informal setting as middle school theatre, being denied a part when you are clearly able to perform it well because of physical appearance or body type is simply awful. I'll also echo the advice of calling the principal and having them address this issue.

And while I suppose it would depend on what the "personal issue" is, I can really not think of anything so "bad" that would keep you from getting a part.

Re:Theatre Drama - 2006/12/13 23:40 I agree with what everyone has said here. I understand that the directors want people to "look the part", but come on, it's school! And I especially don't agree with your being discriminated against because you're "too developed" (and I have empathy on this with you as well, being "developed" myself). I mean, when we hit puberty is beyond our control, and it shouldn't be held against someone especially in middle school. Are thye going to turn someone away because they're too flat-chested, too? Or because their ears are too big? Yeah, in professional theatre or a bigger theatre, that's very possible, but it should absolutely not be the case in schools.
