If I'm correct, Christine is only dead in the end in the movie version.Psalm 42:8

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2007/07/12 09:16Why? Because ALW doesn't care about making good music/shows; he cares about making a show that will have extreme Phantom fans who don't know what Phantom of Manhattan is about flocking to the theatre. I would say he's just in it to make some money, not that he needs it.
If ALW absolutely HAD to make a new musical, he should make one that actually has substance and this time at least TRY to have a new show with good music and lyrics and one that actually has good character development (and there was virtually none of that in the original Phantom). I'm unsure of whether he's capable of that, however.

However, according to a report published in the Daily Mail newspaper, a bizarre mishap has delayed the sequel; Lloyd Webber's cat, Otto, a rare-breed Turkish Van, clambered onto the digital Clavinova piano and managed to delete the entire score for Phantom of Manhattan. Lloyd Webber was unable to recover any of it from the instrument.

I think that's a sure sign from whatever higher being you believe in that he shouldn't publish this musical. Poor kitty...something tells me that ALW was more than a little miffed at it...or maybe he actually didn't like the show but didnt want to admit it so he just deleted and blamed it on his cat.Maria

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2007/09/19 23:13So I found this via a search. Was curious to hear what other people had to say about this after finishing the book.
Hmm...I can totally understand the doubt people have in this decision he made. Yeah, the book had some really out-of-place stuff in it.
Basically the book dates 13 years after the end of Phantom of the Opera
After the last scene at the lake, Erik was led to Madame Giry's home from the opera house, but there was a contract on his head and she bribed him passage on a ship to America. When he got there he jumped ship to avoid being sent back in chains as an illegal immigrant (not to mention because society would've seen him as evil because of his face).
He spent a long time homeless with the other deformed rejects at the docks and became a scam artist to start making money with a younger guy he met who partnered with him. They wound up scamming their way up to becoming wealthy and the young guy became the face while the phantom remained unseen by people in his high rise penthouse and led whatever new operations they were working on.
Mme. Giry dies in 1906 and sends him a very important letter confessing something that shocks him about Christine and Raoul, and he decides then to concentrate on building a massive opera house to rival the Met. Once he gets it built he sends for Christine (unbeknownst to her that it was all Erik's doing) with a new opera he wrote and she reads through it and decides to accept the offer and sail to NY with her family to sing the starring role. At this time she has a 12-year-old son named Pierre, and Raoul is detained back in Normandy for an extra day before making it over to NY.
So from here on Erik sends her obvious clues that he's behind it all and she discovers it almost immediately and he surprises her by meeting her on Coney Island in a house of mirrors that he had built for the developer earlier on in his career. He interacts with her a bunch and they have talks and it's pretty emotional. But it only seems from the book that he's more the emotional one and it depicts her as more afraid than anything. But it ends pretty dramatically. I'm not sure of a few things though. Don't want to spoil it so I can't say what the main twist is throughout the book. It just doesn't totally fit. One minor thing too, in the movie it says Christine died in 1917, whereas in Phantom of Manhattan it dates her as dying in 1906. Anyway, I can only hope that ALW works that detail out and many others that just don't seem to be able to work in a musical.
But if he could take Leroux's book (which I finished the other day) and tailor it so wonderfully (both on stage and in the movie...I know some of you did not like the movie but I adored it), then I do have my hopes that he'll outdo the book. I can't say the book was very good. I already expected a bit of disappointment before starting it though.
The original is just entirely too perfect to match, so I do not expect the sequel to do as well. But I do expect more than the book gave me. At least when it comes to opera there's a lot more drama involved and I do believe I could shed a tear or two seeing it styled that way.
I actually LOVED the cast of the first movie. And I am a bit saddened about there being a new cast...and by the way, the thing about Josh Groban and Katherine Jenkins starring...I could not find any info on that, is that true? And does anyone know of what roles they're playing? I'm nervous about that...I'm not classically trained...I was a music major in college, but never a singer. But I prefer the style the movie focused on moreso than the uber-thick-vibrato style. I know some others feel differently about that. I don't know....I really just want to trust ALW in this and hope that he can put something together at least half as good as the movie was. We shall see.

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2007/09/20 20:26Thanks for the info, Lacey! I have faith just because it's ALW, but I seriously think it should have been left alone. I'm going to see if I can get my hands on a copy of the book and read it myself.Name: Devyn

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2007/09/23 14:30Sorry, but Josh as Phantom...YUK! I like his singing but...no. Kristen Hertenzberg I heard was good as Christine in Las Vegas. But Michael and Sarah are no doubt the best.Name: Devyn

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2007/10/03 18:13Okay I found the book at my local library (dont know why i never checked....) And just finished reading it.
It wasn't AS bad as people are saying it is, but it wasn't great. First of all, it was too short. It tells the story from other peoples views, but it still tells it quite clearly. And the ending was sad. And I don't see how this can be a musical, except for the part in the book where the phantom wrrites an opera. haha
But they will change some of it, or I hope add more or something. But i know Wicked (the musical) isnt at all like the book, so maybe if it's done right, it won't be a big flop.... And putting Michael and Sarah in it would only make sense. *´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2008/04/06 15:50I am so mad about this sequel!!! I mean ALW is going to ruin POTO with this!!! RUIN IT!!! ALW is just trying to make more money off of it!!! He said and i quote,"If your musical was a third as successful as Phantom you would be very pleased."
I think what made POTO's end so great is that you get to use your imagination of what happened to Phantom and i liked that you didn't get to find out what happened to him because it adds to the mystery of him!!!
Idk, there is a VERY VERY small chance it may be good. i haven't read the POM, but i heard the musical will be nothing like it, look at the first musical, it is different from Leroux's book.
and how will they be able to top a chandelier falling down over the heads of the audience?!?!?!

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2008/04/07 12:55Aaahhh come on. Give it a chance. I don't think he would do it if he thought the story was lame. Don't count it out till it's on the boards.

Re:The Phantom of Manhattan - 2008/04/07 13:02There is another post I said this, but check out ALW's blogs on his web site. He is always giving out info there. Much of it is stuff happening in England theatre and his t.v. reality shows, but he does talk about this sequel. Google it as I don't have the address in front of me.
