Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/06/06 09:24I've made up a list of musicals coming to within a few hours of my area that I really want to see, but I know I won't be able to afford to go see all 14 within one season. I've never seen any of these shows live. If anyone could help me narrow it down, that would be GREAT. This includes if any of the DVDs would be just as good as the actual thing.
1.) Parade 2.) The Lion King 3.) The Light in the Piazza 4.) Dirty Rotten Scoundrels 5.) Candide (1999 version) 6.) Into the Woods 7.) Sweet Charity (it's a youth production, meaning the entire cast is 13-18) 8.) Aida 9.) Phantom of the Opera (I've seen the movie and it was absolute crap, so I was thinking maybe I should see the real thing) 10.) My Fair Lady 11.) Jane Eyre 12.) Thoroughly Modern Millie 14.) South Pacific

Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/06/06 10:29Ooh, that sounds fun! Well, if those shows have really good casts, not amateur ones, I recommend seeing:
~ The Lion King - Maybe. ~ Phantom of the Opera - I would read some reviews on the production near you to see if it's worth going to. You don't want to see a mediocre performance of this. ~ Thoroughly Modern Millie - An amazing show that's a lot of fun for the audience and VERY popular right now. ~ My Fair Lady - a classic.
Though they all sound good. Aack. Hard to choose! Let's see if anyone else has suggestions! My Name Is: Lisa! And I'm fifteen! Upcoming Auditions:The Pajama Game Favorite Roles: Tumnus in Narnia The Musical & the Narrator (the Artful Dodger) in A Christmas With Scrooge.

Yeah, I definitely would only go to see it if it had a lot of positive reviews. It was bad enough hearing the movie cast sing the show - the point of seeing this would be to give me a slightly better view of the musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber is certainly not among my favorite composers, but still, I'd rather not always think of POTO with Emmy Rossum's blank stares and such.

Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/06/06 13:28If you have an interest at all in the technical aspect of theatre, do see The Lion King. I was just floored with the way the costumes worked.Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Aloha Pinafore - Volga Upcoming Auditions: Crazy For You - Irene Roth

Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/06/06 18:11I'm not familiar with Sweet Charity, so that's why I listed that it's a youth production in case that would make the show more "ehh."
I guess now I can cross it off my list. Thanks!

Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/06/06 18:37You've got to see Thoroughly Modern Millie! And I agree if Lion King's cast is good to go it as well. The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

- Thoroughly Modern Millie- this show is funny, touching, and great music!
- Candide- it's an operetta, so that may not be your cup of tea, but I loved it. The music is great, and it's hilarious!
- The Light in the Piazza- so good! Love it!
Those are the ones I'd suggest. As for a youth Sweet Charity.... *shudders at the thought of 13-year-olds in fishnets singing 'Hey Big Spender'*

Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/07/07 20:30Depending on the cast..Aida I would suggest"Elphie... you mustn't blame yourself. It's dreadful, it is, to have a house fall on you, but accidents will happen..." -Glinda (Wicked)

I would just reiterate what the others said about Phantom. When I saw Phantom I was extremely disapointed. Bored actors make a boring show, so make sure it has really good reviews.

Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/07/08 01:04Yes, since the movie wasnt really that great, seeing a REAL show of Phantom of the Opera is a good idea. It's one of those shows that if you miss it, you've missed the biggest thing ever. lol shame on me.....
Thoroughly Modern Millie is also a good one, upbeat and fun and some great songs. *´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie
