An Audio of me singing - 2007/05/31 15:41 Okkk so this is me singing "popular" (i know - original) i will post some other songs in about a week and a half because ive got a recording session booked ... but the reason im posting this now is so i can take on board any advice - critisisms for my session

I dont mean to make excuses but im afraid i have 2.

1. The lack of characterisation - the reason for this is simply that i recorded it to go on the demo for my (now-non-exsistent) cabert group and i was told to just "sing the song" rather than "be the character" if that makes any sense ... but i have done it in a performance recently in character (and british) which i loved so much more and will try and get a video of that up soon ....

2. The key change - again it was because the "manager" of our group suggested we bring the key down, either by a semi-tone or a tone - i cant remember now, because it wasn't being performed on stage, it was for a demo CD and the belting note at the end, even though i can reach it fine and all, it was a bit "in your face" - again if that makes sense - (im hopeless with expressing my meaning on the net)

Anyway i'll stop moaning now and just post the link *big breath* please be gentle its the first time ive posted myself singing on the net....

Oh and i apologise for the exagertated "la's" i don't know where that came from

Dream Roles :- Glinda (wicked) Elle (Legally Blonde) Maria (West Side Story) Kate Monster (avenue Q)

Re:An Audio of me singing - 2007/05/31 19:38 okay. got it.

i liked it. i don't think you lacked characterization-- i think this can be a hard song to sing b/c you don't want to imitate. i think you had some character but what you could use a little more of is energy. think of the words you're saying and feel the alliteration and all those poetry terms. that's what i love about schwartz, particularly in Wicked. put the energy in "popular"-- let your Ps explode and drive the song. i think i've been guilty of overarticulating at times b/c it was always driven in to [us] to enunciate. i think in this song, it's okay to put a little more punch in the words. you are a bit legato at points. you don't want to overarticulate to the point that you are "cutting off" your sound (being too stiff) but think of what Galinda is saying. think of the sarcasm. i guess a good way to describe it would be "crisp"? make a contrast between the first part of the song and the end. if you get a chance, definitely post a recording of your performance, b/c for all i know, you've already taken all this into consideration!

i'm not sure i like the song down-- it feels like a full tone, but i haven't listened to the Wicked soundtrack in a while. is it really more comfortable you here? you sound good, but i would like to hear you in the original key.

you have a nice sound but there were times it seemed like you were holding back. i don't know if it was the lower key-- that can be affecting where you are placing your voice. open up a little more-- let the sound ring.

understand that i tend to write a lot....

i hope i gave you some helpful tips. if you need anything explained more, pm me!

welcome to the forum!!!

No i completly agree - ive done it in an actual performance before in the original key and in costume / character etc and i loved doing it because it had a real "buzz" to it, and when the audience laugh along with you it's great, i was duvious about posting this because of the lack of energy that it has, but like i said before it was for a different context that the song was recorded.... but i do agree.

Yeah, for when i record the other songs im going to make sure that i just "let it go" lol, because ive got quite a strong and high belt, but im always scared that people will think im shouting, so i tend to try and control it more.... but im going to ...well not shout obviously... but just project more (i think is the right word) on the other songs....

welcome to the forum!!!

Thank you!

Re:An Audio of me singing - 2007/06/01 06:49 ^^ hehe. i was able to read all of it!

after reading your post about your performance v. the recording of "popular" i think you probably "lost" energy in the transposition. i also think it's a little funny you were told to do it "cabaret-ish" instead of like a performance, but hey-- to each his own!

sounds like you had a great time performing it-- if you have a video link please post.

Re:An Audio of me singing - 2007/06/01 12:17 Thank You stlgurl702

It was cabert simply because of the group that i was in we were a 6 piece and- we did things like cell block tango, Can Can and Riverdance ... so it all had a theme - if that makes sense...

Re:An Audio of me singing - 2007/06/01 14:27 i love your voice too! you make sound so easy to be a great singer.

i'm not crazy about the song being pulled down either....that last note is SUPPOSED to be in your face...its practically what the whole song is all about. and i can tell that you wouldn't have any trouble hitting that note where it's supposed to be. i have no idea why that person told you to bring it down. they're silly.
