Speech Level Singing - 2007/05/24 17:50 So, I've been with my current vocal coach for over a year now, and it kind of feels like I have gone as far with her as I can. She is more of a performance teacher. The lessons would basically just consist of various songs, little or no warm up, and no real technique building. Needless to say, a year later I feel in exactly the same place as I was when I started going to her. So I've decided to go looking for another coach. (plus, everytime I have an audtion, she pushes "Hey Big Spender" since it's the only one she can play really well).

Last night I went to this guy I found in the phone book (who I liked a lot -except that he is pretty pricey) and he told me he teaches the "Speech Level Singing" method (initially taught by Seth Riggs). I had no idea what that was, but by the end of the lesson, I could already hear a small improvement in my voice, and I was having fun.

So I came home and looked up SLS. And now I'm really torn. From what I googled, I can't tell if it is a gimmik thing, if it is something good, or if I should just run away now.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with the Seth Riggs method or know anyone who has? Should I cancel my next lesson and keep looking elsewhere?
I'm Samantha. But you can call me Sam.

Re:Speech Level Singing - 2007/05/24 18:49 I'm not familiar with that technique, but I do know a little a bit about Seth Riggs (which it sounds like you do too). I performed in a Los Angeles awards show last year, and he presented a few awards and spoke. Based on the list of people he's worked with (i.e. Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson, Bernadette Peters, Stevie Wonder, Prince), his technique does very well. I've also got a lot of friends who study under this voice coach (recently returning from a Las Vegas production of Phantom) who was taught by Seth Riggs and may use this same thing.

I've heard nothing but good things about Riggs himself, and these friends of mine are all certainly amazing (and have improved loads). You should give this Speech Level Singing thing another try, and if you decide it's not for you - no harm done!

Especially since you think you sounded good AND had fun - that's always important.

Re:Speech Level Singing - 2007/05/24 20:25 Speech level is a method that can work - but it is just one method.

My personal opinion is that for the best all-round training, it is better to go with someone who knows about lots of different techniques and can then use what works best for you. A teacher who only uses one method could be passing up something else that could work for you... know what I mean?

If you like this guy, by all means go with him but I would ask him if he is exclusive to this method.

Re:Speech Level Singing - 2007/05/25 21:31 i agree with triple threat about asking him if he teaches other kinds of methods to see which would work best for you.

i googled speech level singing and it looks pretty credible to me. it looks like this guy knows what he's talking about and when you worked with this coach you said yourself you already felt like a better singer after one lesson. not to mention that you were having fun. i'd say continue to go see this guy, but also continue to look at other coaches, just to make sure there isn't someone who might fit you better
