You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/21 18:42 Hey guys! I found this hysterical list (which I'm sure several of you have seen) about what makes a true theatre kid. I added some of myself, so feel free to post your own!

YOU KNOW YOU'RE A THEATRE PERSON IF:
~ You get out of breath by going up the stairs, taking walks, or just walking in general
~ You are convinced that dance is a sport and argue constantly with those who disagree
~ You have what seems to be thousands of pairs of dance shoes
~ You have been known to refer to a sports practice as “rehearsal” or a sports try-out as an “audition”
~ You know exactly which audition songs are overdone and always avoid singing them
~ You cringe when other people perform them
~ There is constant drama in your life…in fact, it is expected in your daily routine
~ People get mad at you (and you get mad at them) if you don't hug them hello or goodbye
~ You are extremely critical of other actors’ performances, particularly if they’re your competition
~ Everyone finds out everything
~ All you talk about with your theatre friends is either who sucks and who is "amazing"
~You understand how "politics" apply to theatre and have to put up with them constantly
~ You cry about stupid things constantly
~ You get really pissed off and get in bad moods for no reason randomly
~ Your idea of a Saturday night is going to see your friends show
~ Your best friends are of all different ages
~ You have like 4 different groups of friends who all live nowhere near you
~ You quickly become best friends with any group of people you are doing a show with
~ You have at least one homosexual friend and completely accept it
~ The only thing in your cd player is show tunes
~ You can stay up all night listening to show tunes
~ You know all the lyrics to all the musical theatre shows ever
~ Your non-theatre friends get irritated when all you have time for on the weekends are rehearsals and shows
~ You have been known to call your friends or cast mates by the names of characters they’ve played
~ Everyday conversations contain phrases from past shows, and you thus respond with the following line/lyric
~ You use your current production as an excuse for slacking in school
~ You're in the car for at least a fourth of your week
~ Your parents are sick of driving you everywhere…and if you can drive you are sick of driving other people everywhere
~ Fast food is your dinner at least 5 times a week
~ You can hardly ever sleep in on weekends because you have to go to rehearsal
~ The most exciting thing in your life is knowing what show your company is doing next
~ The most depressing thing in your life is when you can’t be in a show
~ The biggest news in your life is when the cast list comes out
~ You miss school because you are tired, stressed and have a show that night
~ Your life is put on hold when a new touring musical comes to town
~ You were familiar with the shows like Rent, the Producers, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, Moulin Rouge etc. BEFORE they became major movies
~ You've seen all the classic musical movies and compare them with the stage versions
~ You know what green rooms are (and you know that they aren't green)
~ You randomly burst into song and dance in public
~ You save all scripts, programs, and t-shirts from shows you’ve been in or seen
~ You still have secret handshakes, but instead they're more like dance routines
~ You love everything about theatre!

Post your own!

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/21 20:53 hilarious, especially: Everyday conversations contain phrases from past shows, and you thus respond with the following line/lyric

I do this all the time, and my friends get really pissed when they say "I was on my own" and I start belting out the Les Miserables song. They know all of the words to it and they know both of my trouble notes! LOL

also, People get mad at you (and you get mad at them) if you don't hug them hello or goodbye. If you can do stage kisses, why not hugs in real life! LOL

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/21 20:57 yep, I am officially a theatre person! How about:

~your friends know all of the lines to your shows, past and present
~you get excited when your face is streaked with mascara and tears because you have just figured out how to cry on command
~your friends just don't even ask anymore
~you spend your time making these lists.

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/21 21:36 I do the "conversation-into-song" thing all the time. Unfortunately, it usually happens around my non-theatre friends, so they just look at me weird. I'll also just say a quote if what I said before was remotely like the quote. Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/21 21:52 I also try and do that "conversation into song" thing, but just like you it's always around my non-theatre friends and then I'm forced to explain.
Also the "Extremely critical of other Actors' performances" one. I am so jealous of this one girl and am always trying to find something wrong with ther performance or casting, which I've been able to do in everything! Although one was kind of ridiculous...

Here's my one suggestion
~You're parent's wallet is always empty because you force them to buy tickets and show merchandise every month.
The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/21 23:07 Hahaha these are great! I can't wait 'til people add more!

Oh but I thought of a few more
~ You don't throw out any of your old clothes because you might be able to use them as a costume later on
~ You've kissed other guys/girls while in a relationship and it's not considered cheating
~ You have been completely (or nearly) unclothed infront of the opposite sex numerous times
~ You've been to more shows in the last month than movies
~ You understand that whatever happens at cast parties, stays at cast parties

Favorite Roles: Tumnus in Narnia The Musical & the Narrator (the Artful Dodger) in A Christmas With Scrooge.

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/22 00:49 oh oh...i've got one

~when you act odd in public with your non-theatre friends, they explain your behavior to strangers as "she's a theatre kid"...then the strangers are like "ohhhhh"

and i must say i'm guilty of the 'not throwing out any of your old clothes because you can use them for a costume in a later show" thing

^ My favorites/the ones that apply the most to me. What's with theatre kids and hugging? It's so true!

Here are mine:
~ You use "Break a leg!" as opposed to "Good Luck" under all circumstances.
~ Video cameras+theatre kids= much dancing
~ When your company is doing a new show, you and your friends sit around for hours "casting" it
~ Every few weeks you go on an internet audition hunt.
~ Your ears perk up anytime you hear the words "theatre," "audition," "acting," "stage," etc.
~ You keep cruddy clothes for set painting
~ You work your schedule around the slight possibility that you will make "the show"

and that's all I can come up with right now.

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/22 10:02 Also

You collect auditions books, Broadway bootlegs, and search Half Price Books for VHS and DVD movie versions of anything that was ever a Broadway Musical.

You have an enormous collection of sheet music, song books, and karaoke CDs of show tunes.

You collect Broadway soundtracks.

Your room is decorated with framed theatre posters, playbills & other theater memorabilia.

You had to paint your bedroom lime green and pink to go with your "Wicked" collection.

You have any sort of "Broadway" or "Drama" sign up on your wall.

Half of your t-shirts say things like "Drama Queen, I Love Acting, Broadway Bound" &/or are t-shirts from Broadway Shows.

The other half of your t-shirts are shirts from shows you have been IN.

You have voice lessons weekly. You can't wait to go to Musical Theatre Camp. You want to take more dance lessons. Etc.

Your friends all know that if you show up at school with your hair curled in ringlets you must be in a show that night. (AGAIN!)

Everybody wants to hear your "Gertie" laugh. (that probably only happens to me. LOL).
Favorite Shows: Wicked, Hairspray, A Chorus Line & Spamalot
Dream Roles: Ado Annie/Oklahoma, Galinda/Wicked
In production: Ti Moune in Once On this Island Jr
Upcoming Auditions: The Music Man, McKinney Has Talent contest

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/22 10:42 Ha ha, I love these!

"Your friends all know that if you show up at school with your hair curled in ringlets you must be in a show that night. (AGAIN!)"

This is so true! I just had to do this, and whenever I have a hairdo that's not my usual pin-straight, it' "what part's this for?"

You have voice lessons weekly. You can't wait to go to Musical Theatre Camp. You want to take more dance lessons. Etc.

Totally me! I never throw out any clothes because I might use them for costumes. I had to get a new box recently to hold more. And I always work my schedule around a prospective show.

It's so funny because my mom and i saw Wicked together, so now, whenever someone says, "Popular", we both sing the song. Hee hee.

"You never say... the title of the Scottish play, even when you're not in a theatre."

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/22 17:27 OMG it's me!

~When someone mentions hating someone (or when you hate someone), "What Is This Feeling" plays over and over in your head

~ You have a theatre song for every occasion

OK.....that''s all I can think of.

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/22 18:31 "You never say... the title of the Scottish play, even when you're not in a theatre."

You have NO IDEA how close I was to adding that! And it slipped my mind, just before my last post!! AHH THANK YOU!

I can live in peace now.

I hate when you get little kids or newcomers who find out the name of the show and run around saying it over and over just to hear the cast scream at the the top of their lungs or run away... ARGH!

Oh, how we theatre people have our traditions... haha.

A few more:
- No matter your religion, you participate in a cast prayer before every show - otherwise, you're DOOMED!
- You don't giggle at the words "cast squeeze" (or any variation of it).

Re:You Know You're A Theatre Kid If... - 2007/05/22 19:41 All of these are so true!
Also:
~You accidently tell your sports playing friends "Break a Leg'' before their games and they give you a funny look or get insulted
~you get mad at people for telling you " Good Luck" until you realize their not theatre people
~whenever you go shopping instead of looking for yourself, you end up picking out clothes you think would make great costumes for the show you're in right now
~your friends and you have signals for when we think someone is singing, acting, or dancing badly
~you have at least one friend whose hair is pink, purple, blue etc.
